Can you please suggest bands or individual songs in either (popular) rock or jazz genres with notable drummers, or at least good drum parts?
I always liked the style of Stewart Copeland of the Police, and was never impressed by the super huge kits used by some bands - especially, as I remember it, in the 1980s. I'm thinking primarily technique, not novelty.
Bonham from Zep and Clem Burke from Blondie.
Of course! I forgot Bonham.
Keep 'em coming.
probably start with buddy rich?
The Amen break.
Ginger Baker: Toad (live) from Wheels of Fire
Johnny Ball from Think of a Number. Legendary 😀
Neil Peart - Rush
Thomas Haake - Meshuggah
Nicki McBrain - Iron Maiden
Brann Dailor - Mastodon
Mario Duplantier - Gojira
Jean Paul Gaster - Clutch
To name but a few.
1. Christian Vander.
2. Christian Vander.
3. Christian Vander
Actually, I think I may have just found one of the best ever.
Phenomenal intro, no matter what!
If anyone else could play this passage they'd deserve unending respect:
Pick Withers on the first Dire Straits album. Pretty subtle rather than showy but it seems to be impressive stuff.
Donald from A Certain Ratio was nifty..
And a catchy one that springs to mind..
I just love this original studio video of The Who and Who Are You? It's a fantastic track anyway but Keith Moon, particularly the bits where he's playing air drums and just looking more and more mischievous is priceless, enjoy...
(go to 2m15s if you don't want to watch the full vid).
...and the band talking about his genius...
Terry Williams, the drummer on Dire Straits' Alchemy Live was phenomenal. Watch the live version of Sultans of Swing from that album.
Or Clyde Stubblefield, the original #funkydrummer
(of James Brown fame)
the late great Jaki Liebezeit (Can).
Matt Helder of the Arctic Monkeys. Also always like the drumming on the Silent Alarm album by Bloc Party.
Not forgetting John Patrick 'Pugwash' f..... Weathers!
And... Robert Wyatt. (Soft Machine, Matching Mole)
Dave Grohl is actually a very good drummer. This album was some of his best work IMO.
Rick Allen of Def Leppard.
The best one armed drummer in the world?
Or Alex Duthart, pipe band legend.
Jimmy Chamberlain Smashing Pumpkins
As said above Clem Burke
Jet Black from the Stranglers is rock solid.
Shame about the hollering from the audiance
Sorry big Clutch fan 🙂
As I mentioned Vander it's only right to point back to the King Of Chops:
Elvin Jones.
Seen here with Art Blakey. Ye gods I love youtube if o?ly for preserving these amazing things for all to see and hear.
'A' - drumming with Green Milk From The Planet Orange. Beast. Absolute beast.
Ash Sheehan from The Twang is a pretty decent drummer, in fact he's actually a bloody great drummer
Also, the Boredoms video thing from a few years ago was an entertaining watch/listen
Good call for Boredoms! 😀 At first I began to think Yoshimi was a one-trick pony, but was proven wrong.
A good workout/meditation is to be found on Vision Creation Newsun '~'. It's unusual and completely addictive to play. Used drum it out for hrs on a dholak and the neighbours understandably grew to hate me. Good times!
(33min 44secs and on ...)
my old man was a professional drummer (and still gigs whenever he can) and he has liked the two Tony's
Tony Williams

Tony Allen (is suggested he is the best drummer alive)

Cedric Sharpley who played on Gary Numans early stuff is a great drummer who doesn't get a mention much.
The drums isolated from the Stone Rose's 'Love Spreads'
Imagine Purdie giving a TED talk
Deep Purple, Fireball.
Ian Paice noticed Keith Moon’s kit in the studio and ‘borrowed’ one of the kick drums for Fireball, which I think is a phenomenal piece of drumming.
Oh, and Malvern Rider, good shout on Gentle Giant, one of our great ‘lost’ bands.
Carl Palmer ..Emerson Lake & Palmer ..try Brain Salad Surgery.
Lars Erik-Asp..from the Norwegian band Gazpacho is my current favourite ..nothing too flash ..it just works so well with the rest of the music..
Try the albums Missa Atropos & March of Ghosts ..
Some good mentions up there. Bonham, Grohl, Paice, all brilliant. I'd quite forgotten Fireball.
But where is Bill Bruford? A genius. Oh and when it comes to drummers I always have to mention lovely Lucy Landymore. Who??
But left field and not from a genre mentioned but...
Paul kodish
Aka pendulums old drummer.Saw them/him live.blown away.
A few of my favs are merv poppler and nik tig both of ozric tentacles. Pitty tig went on to play for jamiroquai!
Steve white (Paul wellers drummer) is also quality.
Oh and another top drummer is the bloke from Ride.. Loz? He may not be jaz technical but he's got a great style.
+1 for loz tolhurst(ride)
& the bloc party fella!
Mark brezicki from big country .
And if you ever see m83 live ,their drummer is incredible.
Some good ones up there! Steve Ferrone is pretty bloody handy with the sticks. Would recommend listening to some of his work.

O-o-o-o another one: Marco Minneman. The smiliest drummer on the face of the planet.
I know the OP doesn't want stupidly technical stuff, but the joy on the guy's face playing this Dream Theater song is infectious.
For solid funk grooves, Joseph 'Zigaboo' Modeliste of The Meters.
Very different and techier but Jojo Mayer is pretty incredible.
Luke Flowers' drumming for the Cinematic Orchestra is some of my favourite (I trued his rear wheel once!)
I'll nominate Ralph Rolle.. the current drummer with CHIC but has done plenty with Funk/Disco and Dance bands over the years..
This is Dave Lombardo, of Slayer-fame, playing not-Slayer (the first part, anyway):
