Watched the first two Tom Baker ones this afternoon. Wow, they were so bad.

Will start watching new one on iPlayer shortly.

I wish they'd brought back Tom Baker instead of Tennant.

Watched the first two Tom Baker ones this afternoon. Wow, they were so bad.

What?! I watched them yesterday, they were excellent.

I've started with Jon Pertwee...I'm sure I watched these first time round but wasn't even born. Stories are daft but watchable.
I'm hoping BBC keep these on iPlayer long enough to let me watch them all.

Certainly ticks a lot of boxes, also ain't a patch on Ecclestone/Piper, Smith/Gillan, Capaldi/Coleman.

Started watching, gave up as I don’t want to watch a programme that the bbc are just using to tick every minority box going and be on point with everything

Shouldn't you be on twitter rather than here?

I enjoyed it. Was painfully "right on", but it was always going to be.

Imho Tennent is the best of the new generation.

I rather enjoyed #DrWho this evening. Then I enjoyed all the special snowflakes hurling their toys out of their prams over some pronouns

Anyone remember when K-9 was as much a star as the Doc?

We made this for school. Me on the left, my smaller mate got in the dalek and could reach down to the floor and push it along on a hidden skateboard... With K9 pulled along after him on a bit of cotton. K9 was on Lego wheels. He could move the sensor/zappy thing with his hands. Happy days!

(We had to live on eggs for a few weeks...)

That was a lot of fun. I'm pretty sure the "tick every minority box going" was done primarily to be inclusive (and that is a fine thing to my mind) but with an eye on winding up the kind of people who need winding up, it was pretty over the top and looked to be a bit of a poke in the eye (no not the Meep's eye)  to outraged of Tunbridge wells. Who hadn't noticed that this kind of thing has been going on in dr who for decades.

Loved it. Went a long way for me in erasing some of Chibnall's arsing about with things.

It ticked a lot of boxes for me (no, not JUST those ones...).

Silly old-school sci-fi fun.
Decent budget and effects (thanks to the House Of Mouse I guess)
Despite that, some (I hope deliberately) gloriously cheap looking monsters.
Some proper heart (for me this is what RTD really brings to proceedings)
Absolutely wilful and wonderful swings in tone.
David Tennant's eyebrows - might even surpass the great Roger Moore in terms of brow acting?

I for one loved the 'hey! look at me!' inclusivity. Worth doing in its own right anyway, and even more so as it will wind up all the reactionary idiots - absolutely certain RTD overplays this precisely for that reason. Plus, Dr Who has pretty much always been a bit woke and that's all good with me since I refuse to see that word as derogatory.

Loved tennant in it......

But

The story line was predictable and dull and I lost interest fairly quickly, Catherine Tate is my least favourite companion and does t really cut it for me. The girl who played her 'teenage' daughter was blatantly in her 20's. Honestly if the Dr wasn't changing again I think I wouldn't bother watching any more. Lucky it's ment for kids and not mid 40's guys like me 😂

The documentary on Ch5 was interesting regarding Terry nation and the less than wholesome aspects of  John Nathan-Turner. Peri having to pretend she was from the US.....all the time! Even when interviewed on BBC breakfast. I never realised that!

yep I’m sure the pronoun stuff was tongue in cheek to wind em right up.

Not sure that the story was that great but tbh we forget it’s for the kiddies with strictly for the ‘dults. 🙂

Quality stirring. Also realising that they have the budget/tech to do stories that once (like this one) were strictly comics or audio only without losing sight of the traditions - old school monster effects.

It’s a simple question,  are the characters there for self service or for the story

Out of interest, what age do we think it's aimed at?

My 7yr old really wanted to watch it as there's been loads of build up on CBBC the last week or so.

She sat through it but didn't have a clue what was going on and said it was too bonkers, not really bothered about watching again. Laughed at a couple of bits, but mostly went over her head.

It's instructive that you haven't used a question mark.

@ransos, suppose that’s because it’s more of an opinion than a question.

it’s like the argument that gay characters should be played by gays and for that matter straight by straight, surely it’s shows the quality of the actor/actress that you believe they are who there meant to be. If it requires someone to essentially play themselves. Either the actor or more likely the writing is poor.

again just an opinion, we’re all allowed them

I know we're going off topic here, but I struggle on this. As in - I can follow and support the 'rules' but I can't actually explain it myself.

A scottish actor putting on an English or American accent - no problem.

A straight actor playing a gay person - not so certain

An able-bodied actor playing a disabled person - also becoming an issue, but Daniel Day-Lewis won an Oscar for doing that, and Eddie Redmayne did similar relatively recently

A white actor using prosthetics and/or make up to play a different ethnicity person - absolutely not (recent need eg: for WSS to cast latin american actors)

Enjoyed that, it was great to see a couple of the old faces back. I did feel a bit sad about Bernard Cribbins RIP!
I wonder what the explanation for the 14th Doctor having the same face as the 10th Doctor will be?

I used to hide behind the sofa as a kid to watch as I was frightened of the Darleks.

I think the revial shows lack the charm and wobbly scenery of the originals.

Getting a little fed up with it being promoted on every BBC news broadcast.

We've been playing catchup on doctor who for the last 4 years and have only just reached the 2nd episode of Jodie Whitaker.

Can we jump forward to the current Tennant stuff without out on missing plot points?

From Chibnall and Whitaker? I'd say yes, especially as it looks like RTD is likely to basically retcon/ignore the big changes from that period.

I just caught up. The subtitle should have been "What Happens When You Give A Huge Budget To A Magnificent Bastard." Has fury erupted on the bottom half of the Internet yet?

There was something bugging me about the Meep, particularly the “meep so lonely” stuff. Finally worked it out.

Also, why does The Meep look so familiar?

The one thing that irked me is that Beep the Meep is not a new character; the Meep originated in the comics (probably not considered canon) and featured in Colin Baker era audio dramas by Big Finish (definitely considered canon). 14 absolutely should have known who Beep was.

However,

it looks like RTD is likely to basically retcon/ignore the big changes from that period.

I read earlier that this new run is considered to be Episode 1 of Season 1; New Who was Series 1-13 and Classic Who was Season 1-26. The iPlayer listing would bear that out, there are three entries with the latest being listed as (2023-).

I wonder how much of Chibnall's era they're going to just toss out. That's no bad thing in my view. It's a show that's been on-air for like 45 years and the fanbase is full of neckbeards going "well, actually, I think you'll find that in episode 3 of the Second Doctor's story 'Attack of the Flowerpot Men' it was established that his blood is in fact invisible" or some such fappery. That's hard to write for (see also: Star Trek). There was a lot of twaddle in Chibnall's run - the whole fugitive Doctor / timeless child storyline was mince of the highest order and needs to be in the bin - despite the best efforts of the actors.

Absolutely bloody loved that!

Ridiculous aliens, brilliantly over acted and beautifully physically realised. Proper emotional stirring up of parents’ feelings by the Donna storyline and her family. So loud it’ll hurt the delicate poor we souls affirmation of minorities. The only thing it missed was one Cribbins‘ masterclass performances in human connection.
