As Kryton pointed out, the Speccie are hedging their bets - one pro-Cummings article, one anti.

Looking at the mood on here, beginning to think that this is one of of those occasions where the government has totally misread the public’s strength of opinion.

I just took one for the team and had a look at the comments on the Daily M**l. I sorted by 'most recommended', sifted down through well over a hundred and couldn't find one even remotely supportive of Cummings or the govt as a whole.

Asking Boris to sack DC is like asking Emu to sack Rod Hull.

😆

I admire the positivity of some on near, but I state again what I said on page 1, Cummings is going nowhere, at least not until Brexit is done.
This will be ignored, swept away and dismissed.

ratherbeintobago - you beat me to it.
Of the two Spekkie articles, the Alex Massie one carries more weight as he is the Scottish editor; Melanie McDonagh who penned the other is a 'contributor'.
As cummings wife, Mary Wakefield, is a commissioning editor there could be an 'interesting' discussion between her and Massie.
Did she commission McDonagh's piece?
As for cummings future after his departure - a bit like steve bannon, washing around the political fringes?
Does Starmer think he's won the lottery? johnson's ineptitude and lying; now this.

That spectator article is not going in hard in any way - key paragraph:

It doesn’t even matter if what he did was appropriate or sensible or a reasonable means by which an awkward or complicated situation might best be managed. All that could be true and it wouldn’t change a thing. Perception is sometimes more important and here the perception is that there is one set of rules for government insiders and another, quite different, set of rules for everyone else. That is not just the perception, either, for it appears to be the reality too and will remain so, and be understood as such, for as long as Dominic Cummings remains in post. You may sympathise with his predicament – an unwell wife, a small child – all you like and it doesn’t change a thing.

I frickin hate the Spectator from its meally mouthed name right down to its lickspittle staff and if fence sitting was an olympic sport it would have an unbroken run of gold.

A leopard never changes its spots

It'll never be dismissed, some of the sacrifices people have made are crazy

Not everyone got furloughed or still worked and drove 10+ miles a day to ride a bike

it’s not a sacking offence it’s a criminal offence

The criminal bit is arguable. All hangs on how you define "reasonable" in "no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse."

@frankconway Not sure if Starmer think he’s won the lottery, but between the ineptitude of HMG and his predecessor, the bar is low.

@winston That still looks pretty damning, point they’re making is the perception matters and as long as he’s in post, the perception is bad.

From the guardian...

A week earlier Cummings was seen by another witness in Barnard Castle on Easter Day, 30 miles away from Durham, the investigation found. The town, which takes its name from the English Heritage site at its centre, is a popular destination for days out.

He's a lying ****. The Tories are lying ****s.

All those ministers that threw what little credibility they had left under the bus to defend him today, must be fuming that the mirror/guardian were sitting on more allegations 😂😂😂

Sadly, even if (when) he goes, he will set up a company whose services will quietly be hired right back at twice his current rates. We won't be shot of him unless he goes to prison.

rope the chair, and watched

Honestly most of the cabinet would have been right into that sort of stuff at their schools anyway.

Something tells me further revelations about his movements will be coming out over the long weekend. Come Tuesday he'll be hung out by the press and they'll use it to properly rip the government apart.

They've pissed off an awful lot of the public with their handling of this and the press will have a field day on it.

We'll know he's done when his girlfriend Kuenssberg realises he's no longer useful for her career and jumps ship to the other side. I give it until tomorrow morning. She's probably already ringing round her contacts trying to find out who might replace him. It's got all the signs of a classic media stitch up, and the Guardian and Mirror have done an amazing job of it so far. I wonder what's next in the pipeline?

Still confident uncle Jezza.

This lot are utterly shameless. None of the usual accepted norms apply to them. He won’t jump and they’re too scared to push him.

For a start, to sack him Joris would actually have to come out of hiding, and that’s not happening.

Mmmmm..... pies 😃

All the witnesses will be evil lefties who're making it up. But also will be invading his privacy, even though it's all made up and he was never there.

Hmm, not what the police said earlier.
This stinks.

Anyway, I'll give Binners 2-1 on the baked commestibles of his choice.
Gone by Tuesday.
When you've lost The Sun, it's game over.

I reckon DC has a copy of the Russian report squirreled away with orders for it to be released if anything were to happen to him.

I think you’re all being a bit optimistic about what will happen. Private individual goes back to home town so family can help with childcare due to parents showing signs of possible Covid 19. This is how it will be spun. This man is not a politician or even a civil servant. He doesn’t give a monkeys what anybody thinks either. Even if he is sacked as an advisor (doubt that will happen no matter how much the press and the opposition push) how are you going to get Boris not to adhere to his advice?
Boris you must not speak to Dominic in class he’s been a very naughty boy! This man thrives on this sort of stuff, he won’t give a stuff.

@Inbred456 And the day trip to Barnard Castle?

If he’s sacked as an advisor and is still seen hanging around No 10, then PMQs will be… interesting, and as most of the press don’t have much love for Cummings either, the headlines are unlikely to play well.

I agree with the previous poster.
the press seem to hate Cummings,so why would they hold back. They have him and his puppet over the fire on this one and I would be surprised if they let go

...and wouldn't it be nice if the editor of the Spectator called his wife and said " If I wanted fiction I'd ask J K Rowling... now jeff off."
