well, some folks are going on some very very long walks then

Maybe you should alert the police about all the dog walkers going missing.

ext time you roll around on the grass just think what animals have wee'd and poo'd there when humans are not invading their space. I wonder if people with OCD ever think of that?

Refer back to my original point - the risk to children is especially present in dog and cat shit, not badgers, not unicorns, not slugs. So surely any considerate dog owner (of which there are many and certainly more now than ever before I would say) will appreciate this and keep their dogs away from public spaces where small children are likely to be playing. It isn't a great deal to ask is it?

I love dogs.... although I couldn't eat a whole one... Ahem..

Why do people think that their dog crapping on the beach is fine? It's not like you don't know they're going to do it!??!

I like dogs, but I draw the line at them crapping everywhere.

And for those that are using the kids argument, what planet are you on? Were you always an adult?

Sigh. Really din't want to get drawn in, but the tractor beam was set to high... I have a dog and always pick up its poo, unless I'm properly out in the countryside, in which case it gets flicked well off the path and into the undergrowth.

I cannot though, control when and where my dog takes a dump. If he is having a walk on a beach, at the right time of year, and he decides to squat, there's nothing anyone can do about it. And why on earth would you anyway?! So long as you pick it up.... Yes I know he's going to do it at some point on a walk, but there isn't a 6 foot square patch of grass where dogs automatically carp.

I hate getting covered in the stuff as much as anyone else though and will always let an owner know if their animal has fouled somewhere - they always pretend not to have noticed, or even deny that their dog did it. I always have plenty of spare bags so they haven't any excuses.

Dog poo is gross no question, but as a dog owner i get that, thats why i pick it up.

Probably preaching to the converted, a blanket ban of dogs on beaches probably wouldn't work, unless enforcers were there 24/7. What councils have resources for that these days.

In the same way i still see see plenty of dropped litter on the streets despite the threat of on the spot fines etc.

I really dont know how these issues can be addressed. In any case I will continue to pick up ๐Ÿ™‚

With the notable exception of some jump sites I've never been on any trail where there is litter or rubbish every two metres. I have however been plenty of places where the crap frequncy is at least that.

So it's okay to allow your dog to shit on the beach and leave it then, because other people and organisations don't care about our coastline either?

This^^

I recently offered a young(ish) female a poo-bag to clear up after her dog - she told me to go **** myself. Apparently, I must be mental if I thought she'd go round picking up s**t... why did I think she took her dog over the fields in the first place? :-\

Nobby - if it was a small dog, I'd have been tempted to pick it up, roll it in its own mess and hand it back to the owner. Dogs don't mind poo, mostly, but she would ๐Ÿ™‚

Ohh get you.

So what is your point then? Or was it just a pointless statement that has absolutely nothing to do with the preceding posts?

I think my mainpoint is keeping beaches clean from any sort of nasties is quite important. You may of heard STW replies often have absolutely nothing to do with the preceding posts and just involve bickering from twunts like you and TJ.

At least with dogs, a responsible owner is able and willing to clear up after them. Neighbourhood cats poo all over our garden - it's absolutely disgusting.

At least I was keeping to the point of the OP. You drew me into bickering by posting an entirely pointless response.

Don't post irrelevancies and I won't be a twunt.

The bickering bit is a debateable point, but what isn't is the fact that neither of those comments were either warranted or acceptable.

Yeah, but you're not seeing it through the eyes of the dog owner. If you had something that loved you just for being you, and somebody was rude about it, you'd go in all guns blazing. You'd have to, because if the roles were reversed, you know that is what Fido would do.

whereas someone saying that they dislike children is just about universally accepted as being normal behaviour.

Ooh, that's a good idea. Nice non-confrontational way of saying "please clean up after your shithound, thanks." Will any old bags do?

As a responsible dog owner I pick up my dogs poo on the beach but thanks for tarnishing us all with the same brush

I'm not convinced you can pick up a pile of urinated sand.

if you are that worried about contact with urine then surfing in english waters probably isn't such a good idea.

I'm not sure why there seems to be an argument here. It's clear that the dog owners on this forum pick up their dogshit and the non dog owners think dog owners should pick up their dogshit so we are al in agreement aren't we? Surely the people we should all be uniting against are the non-forum using, dog owners who don't pick up their dogshit.

Urine I'm less worried about, it's not very nice but it is at least generally sterile

don't to the beach when it's raining then, a lot of pumping stations get overloaded and discharge raw sewage...

**** me sideways! I'm convinced about one thing and it's nothing to do with dog poo. Who mentioned picking up urinated sand?

I admit that I cringe at the thought of someone stepping in sand that my dog has just wee'd on. That is why I really don't mind the dog ban during the height of the season. It also saves people from irresponsible dog owners.

But:

1. Have you seen how quickly a little tinkle of dog wee disperses into the sand?

2. You do realise what is in the sea that washes up on a beach twice a day don't you? Yes that's right folks, human poo germs!

I am amazed, mountain biking is an outdoor pursuit. Outdoors means you are highly likely to come into contact with some sort of animal poo or wee. If you don't like it stay indoors at your nice clean PC (which probably contains all manner of nasty germs all over the keyboard).

going back to beach bans - at weston super mare the council has it spot on IMO.

There is a Marina with sheltered water for kids and there are no dogs allowed at any time of the year.

During peak season dogs are only allowed on the bit between the marina and the peer where the main ramp is and the other end of the beach where the windsurfers/kiteboarders/land sailing people go.

That area is sectioned into wind surfing only next to one car park - sensible as they have heavy kit. Land sailing at the other end next to the other car park as again they have heavy kit. Kite surfing in the middle as they have lighter kit.

During summer dog owners have to share this with the people doing these sports so both have to take care but at least there is not masses of kids running around to get hit or step in 'unrinated sand'.

During winter, when all the people who are afraid of bad weather and animal poo and wee stay indoors dogs are allowed back on the main beach. This means the people who are doing the sports can have their areas to themselves.

It's a compromise which I think works very well. The only problem is they put all the damn wash taps in the no dogs area so if you need to wash a mucky dog like this:

[IMG] [/IMG]
(that pic comes in handy)

you can't. You also can't get drinking water very easily, except for the thoughtful cafe/shop owners who put water out in margarine tubs.

I just got back from my local dog walking loop and came back with 2 hands full of drinks cans and foil crisp packets - yup the kids are back in school. And that was only the ones from the fields where the animals are grazing. I left the cans that line the road as they are not a danger to the cows and donkeys.

I'm glad the dog ban is almost over, means my dog can poo on the beach again instead of on blind corners at trail centres...
