i want to change the regular bathroom interior door handle with no lock at all to one of those with the little turny knob under the door handle (all made as part of the handle) to lock the door.
do these handles lock the handles mortice bit thats already there ordoes it throw an actual bolt type bit across. im thinking will i need to enlarge/change the door internally or is it nice and easy and i just change the handle assembly only? (fingers crossed)
depends on the handle. Normally the little twisty thing in the middle just stops the handle being turned and there fore means its locked.
Door handles usually very easy to swap and replace on internals.
ok so hopefully its just handles...
Ones I have throw a seperate bolt to lock the door.
Just bear in mind that locks which come with handles tend to be shorter than those designed for use with knobs so the spindle which links the handles together is closer to the opening edge of the door. The result of this is that if you retro fit knobs where there were handles previously you can end up catching your knuckles on the door frame when you open the door away from yourself whilst holding the knob (if you'll excuse the expression 😉 ).
was about to say exactly the same thing but wombat has saved me the trouble
I don't think he's fitting knobs - its just a misleading title. Knobs are rubbish anyway - always fall off.
yaeh im a handle man, im not into knobs... 😯
There are two types of lever latch handle/privacy,that are in use,one incorporates a small cam on the inside of the back plate of the handle, that holds the spindle in a locked position, the other type has a seperate spindle that engages in the small square hole of a mortice sash lock/privacy,this type requires some good woodwork skills to make the hole/slot in the side of the door longer, also another hole has to be drilled for the smaller spindle.
Both usually have an overide function on the outside though.
