Either my radio is on its way out or there is something screwy with the signal.

Not giving us much to go on, there...
Depending on where the transmitter mast is, it could be bad weather breaking up the signal, like digital TV does.
Or there's a transmitter outage.

Cheers count I think it is a combination of what you suggest, symptoms are burbling speech and on 4 extra it seems to get stuck then goes silent for a couple of seconds.

Pf, yes, that's exactly what happens when the signal gets blocked by heavy rain or snow, or something else blocking the signal. Audio equivalent of digital picture going all blocky and pixelated. Worse if you're some way from a transmitter, for obvious reasons, inverse square law 'n'all. 🙂
