Netgear HDD died.
Report was emailed to Netgear.
Dead, no chance of data recovery they say.

Do I accept this, or should we look for a specific data recovery company?

Just restore from your backups.

OnTrack will probably be able to get it back. Expect a bill pushing a grand. How badly do you want it back?

backups.

That is word is underused here it seems.

Badly.
Is it worth trying, even if manufacturer says 'no data recoverable'?

The manufacturer have advised that it's not recoverable by them. Netgear (or the drive OEM) isn't a data recovery specialist.

Single HDD or part of a RAID set? Ontrack will do it for a price, and there are plenty of no fix no fee options out there.

If you want a go yourself for tens of pounds, GRC SpinRite has pulled a few back from the dead for me. Don't do this (although it should be fine) if you're prepared to pay for recovery - just get it to them as is.

If it won't fire up then EBay and identical drive and swap the controller cards over.
