For some reason no sound on my computer at the mo so hope these sound OK, if not do a search - well worth it.

2nd for Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah - better than Leonard Cohen's original and soooo far ahead of that x-talent show winning one's version...

For me a cover version should be different to the original - it may not end up being better but if you're just going to perform the song in the same way - why bother?

So on that note - how about Drop Nineteens version of 'Angel' by Madonna or Uncle Tupelo's country version of 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' by The Stooges

They also did some good versions of:
1969 - MC5? Stooges?
Jolene - Dolly Parton
Emma - Hot Chocolate
Knocking On Heaven's Door - Dylan

and some pretty poor ones too:
Louie Louie
Ghost Rider
Sister Ray

which one Justa? Like I said no sound on the computer at the mo so just googled the artists/titles
But I did say Just like honey is good just not as good, if you mean modern love then I might have chosen a bad performance but yes the Last town chorus single of it was better than Bowies '80's one. (big Bowie fan BTW so not taking anything away)

Jimmy Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (Dylan wrote amazing lyrics, but was a shit performer IMO)

Depeche Mode - A Pain that I'm used to (Jacques Lu Cont Remix) (if you've heard the original, you'd wonder if it's possible to make a worse song! This Remix is awesome though...

Dirty Funker - Lithium Injects a whole load of energy into a very very sombre original

Tone Loc - Wild Thing (Peaches Remix) Original is quality, but this remix/cover of it is even better in my book!

Ok, so a couple are remixes rather than full on covers, but they're totally different to the original and better in every way in my book. Enjoy! ๐Ÿ˜‰

if you're talking about nirvana's unplugged version of man who sold the world that is pony. Cobain cocks the solo up and sounds like he's really not interested. I'm was a massive fan of nirvana (and i'm just as big a fan of Bowie) and i so was disappointed that nirvana even did an unplugged, as I just knew it would be shit.

Toy Dolls have a stack of them.

I'm rather partial to The Order Of The Ebon Hand cover of The Banshees' "Spellbound."

Porcupine Tree - Shallow
The Mission - Wasteland
Foo Fighters - Learn To Fly
The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary

Wasn't near enough every Elvis song a cover version of something someone else had done?

Aleigh- William Orbit just did a version, rather than a cover. Bond did one too.

Has to be 'I think we're alone now', by The Tiffanies.

And every single Bob Dylan song sounds better sung by anyone else but him. Brilliant song writer- cr4p singer. I was alarmed to find out recently, that he's still alive!

Johnhoo, Their (the Sisters) version of Comfortably numb is good too (but hard to find) can email you an mp3 if you like.

Good luck covering she sells sanctuary (Some things are holy , like why you never hear any good Smiths covers )

House of the Rising Sun has been done a few times; arguably the best version is the Animals' one.

And that French bird did a mean version of Paint It Black, but it's in French, so she cooduv been singing 'RudeBoy is a silly wally and he smells of poo', and I wouldn't know. I just wouldn't know...

All of Johnny Cash's American albums ๐Ÿ˜‰ The Mercy Seat is my favourite I think.

The rest of the covers I like are a bit obscure...

Not my usual thing, and will probably get flamed for this, but...

Guns N Roses - Sympathy For The Devil

Just more twisted than the Stones version, which I like too of course, and I think Axl Rose's screech voice works better on it than Mick Jagger's.

Question - like I said no sound on my failing dinosour of a computer so had to find Elvis on my ipod to listen to Love letters seeing as how this thread put me in mind of it.

Now, would you index it under E for Elvis or P for Presley? (took me ages to find it)

Good shout Aleigh. Their Live and let die was good - The Sisters knocked spots off GnR's Knockin on Heavens door though
