My spaniel seems to pick up ticks regularly. Last year, instead of the old tick treatment that just treated the tick-borne diseases,we were recommended a tablet called Bravecto, which lasts for 12 weeks, and kills any ticks/fleas that bite him, & they just fall off. He's been on it a while now, and it seems great. He also seems to like the taste of it & just gobbles it down!

Will have to get some for our 18 month old labradoodle, were in the lakes a lot & he always comes back with a tick, we were using the tweezers to get the buggers of but they don't half leave a nasty mark / swelling on him.

Tried the treatments from pets at home & they don't seem to do any good to be honest.

Where'd you get the bravecto from dantsw13?

Cheers
Mark

frontline used to do the same and keep them free (kind of) from fleas. I have no idea if it still does as my dog passed away a couple of years ago 🙁

Mark - our local vet. It's cheaper online too if you google it, but our vet is doing a buy3 get 1 free offer.

The big difference with Bravecto is that a tick will die and fall off within 24 hrs.

We've always used Frontline on our dogs. Its an oil that goes on the back of their neck, between the shoulder blades. Works in the same way to those tablets you've described (tick bites dog, tick dies and falls off), but can be quite messy to apply if its not done right.

Ticks can be really nasty for humans as well. I've started using high strength DEET on myself during tick season. Lyme disease is no joke and UK doctors aren't taking it seriously so good luck getting that diagnosis, let alone treatment.

devash, we've tried the frontline treatment, not sure if it's due to him being a hairy bugger but it doesn't seem to work, we found a tick the size of fat juicy raisin on him last year, got it of & jeez it was huge, me being a loon I burst it in some tissue what a horrible little critter.

I'll look out for the Bravecto dantsw13 & see if it keeps him free of them.

It comes in different dose sizes for different dogs. It's been very effective for us, and we found several dead ticks falling off last year, whereas using frontline we found plenty attached.

Our Border Terrier caught fleas last year, we tried all sorts including Front Line. In the end we plumbed for Brecto they were gone with in 24 hours. So he's going on it as a prophylactic soon.

We used to use frontine on our collie but he still picked up ticks. Last year we tried a Seresta tick collar from the vets, 40 quid but worked very well with no ticks at all. Just put one on the dog this evening. Were based in exmoor so lots of ticks due to sheep and deer.

My FB's cat came home with literally an ear full of ticks the other day, all sorted now, but she was pretty freaked out by it.

we use bravecto its very very good, lots of moorland walks means loads of ticks and frontline never really coped with it as i was always picking off massive ones which had obviously been gorging for ages.....with bravecto i have found loads of dead ones but none alive and none on him which is a vast improvement...

Do dogs get diseases off ticks?
I used to find em on my dog and she never noticed. Quite enjoyed removing them with one of those wire tick removers.

Frontline has lost effectiveness (particularly on fleas) since it's become so widely available over the counter at pet shops, supermarkets etc. The vet prescribed treatments are the best (including Bravecto). Most of them kill the tick after it's attached though, but Advantix is a spot on one that is supposed to prevent them attaching.

Yes they do plus the risk of sepsis.

We have used Nexgard (afoxolaner) last year and this on vet recommendation, so far anecdotally very good. Lake District bracken full of ticks!

I used Seresto collars on my dogs last year and they worked very well. Frontline not so much in all previous years.

Took Ziva to France few years ago and she got 12 in one day, including one next to her eye which was tricky to remove with the tweezers. Picked up collars from supermarkets to combat it, the following year we got a special order collar that I cant remember the name and will look up. Quite expensive at about £30 but she didn get a single tick for the entire holiday.

I think the greatape is right and it was a seresto collar we used and as I said it kept all the ticks at bay over a two week period and there was a lot of ticks in France.

We've used Bravecto for a couple of years - certainly seems to do the job and it's oh so easy to treat our cocker ..... throw it towards her!

I'd echo TGA's advocacy of Seresto collars...we moved to the Cairngorms NP in Aug 2014 and were picking 3-4 ticks off each of our spaniels after every walk in the first year. Switched to Seresto the following year and now only pick them off ourselves!

Seresto collars certainly work well, but just keep an eye on your dog when it's on. Ours was fine with one on for the first summer, but the second summer it caused him to become very subdued each time we put it on, almost to the point of catatonic.

We'll be trying the Bravecto tablets this season.

Serresto collar for our spaniel. Seems very effective. For those that have an opinion, it's a combination treatment comprising slow release neo-nic and pyrethroid from the plastic matrix of the collar.

Judge as you will.
