@sandboy .... we'd happily find a home for your tank! Would fit nicely between the Tamiya stuff and the boat. My lad at 14 is in love with anything radio controlled at the moment.

I'm liking HTS' hand painted decals on the Russian tank, I bet they're brilliant fun.

Excellent paintwork on the Escort again Merak, very authentic.

I finished cutting out the 2CV shell at the weekend and started masking it, will get some paint on it this week. I'll have to alter the chassis before fitting it as it's in SWB mode for the Renault shell. Wonder if the handling will be any different as a LWB chassis? It was already pretty stable.

@jefwachowchow

Thanks for the advice. Will try that. Was your steering working fine when that happened?

@benp

The steering appeared to energise (twitch) when switched on as normal but no power to the motor at all which is what sent me on the wrong path. Honestly cant remember of the steering worked other than that. Probably not to be honest.
Its just a real quick way to remove the steering servo from the equation to unplug from the receiver (I typed ESC last time. Its been a while since I did it).

Argh!

The replacement radio won't pair with the tank. Massive, MASSIVE ball-bags.

In other news the new tank came with a much better method of getting the smoke oil into the smoker so I topped them both up and they now generate enormous clouds of the stuff, but one at a time as I ONLY HAVE ONE WORKING RADIO!

^Tell me about it! Almost wish I’d never seen this thread! Now have a Tamiya quattro TT-02 (painted art car style),an FTX 1:10 Land Rover crawler and a Killer Body Delta Integrale painted yellow waiting to go on a TT-02D drift chassis that I’m building up.

The cutting and masking of the deux chevaux rallye has finally finished! Onto paint - wish me luck everyone. I found masking it up only moderately annoying this time, I'm clearly getting used to it. Unlike the Unimog I actually took my time, we'll see how it looks when it's done.

I'm fancying black for the roof and wings - and either bright yellow or Unimog orange for the currently masked bits. Any thoughts? The box shows a white body and green wings which I don't fancy at all. And I have the yellow and orange paint from the other two bodies 🙂

Another vote for buying another tank HTS - looks like a bargain at that price.

Loving the blue Escort Merak, the future owner's going to be very chuffed.

2CV update. Had the orange paint warmed up and ready to go but....

I casually mentioned the colour choice to Mrs C and she said it had to be yellow as it was more waspy. 🙂 . Couldn't argue....

I'm really pleased with how it's come out. Still not perfect but I've learnt so much since I did Unimog. Will look better again with the accessories and stickers on it. And a few battle scars too!

Love that 2cv. Usually it annoys me when rc cars roll over in fast corners but for a 2CV that's highly scale I suppose

Help needed!

A little sister/crawler accident has resulted in the steering not working on no.1's RC crawler. The controller/ESC/servo all work as the trim buttons adjust the steering but the steering wheel doesn't make the wheels turn.

I can buy spares for all three but by the time I do I'm £20 off a complete new car.

Any ideas I could try before I guess at which of the 3 to try first?

I'm not sure what crawler you have but you should be able to swap the plugs for the ESC and steering servo on the receiver. You can then test the steering on the throttle trigger and the ESC on the steering wheel.

The M05-RA chassis is really low, as is the weight - even when the suspension's set at the highest level (as here). When I had it setup with the Renault 5 shell it was very untippy, unlike the Unimog which rolls over as soon as you try and turn. Hoping it'll be even more stable with the 2CV shell on it as I've had to change the chassis configuration from SWB to LWB. Probably have a go over on the scoot park this weekend when my son's with me again - we'll report back 🙂

Good idea but... Its an FTX Outback mini 2.0 and the Servo to ESC is 5wire and the ESC to motor is 2wire.

I'm pretty certain its not the controller so a new servo vs new servo and ESC is only £8 difference, i can live with that.

I'm about to take the plunge. My son really wants an RC vehicle, so I bought him a 1/10 crawler for his upcoming birthday. It's an FTX Ravine (sold as a Danchee Ridgerock here in the US), basically the cheapest hobbyist grade crawler I could find, but it has easily available replacement parts and should be good for us I think. We've got lots of desert rocks to try it out on, so I think it should be good fun.

Power bundle 2 £248

That’s the bundle I bought with my first Tamiya last year. Battery charges in a couple of hours and last a decent length of time. Controller is basic but works fine and is nice and light. Only downside is the controller can only store one receiver at a time, so if/when you buy another car you’ll need another controller. If you want to race two you’ll need separate controllers anyway.
My second build I bought a controller that can switch between 10 cars and came with two receivers. Now on third build (that escort) and didn’t need any extra radio gear.

As for the build, it’s a nice car. I’m about 1/2 way through and really enjoying it. Make sure you buy the bearing kit. Much better speed and battery life with them. Much easier to fit during build process than strip down and rebuild. Maybe also consider oil dampers as well. Kit comes with friction dampers and can be a bit bouncy.
Also, body comes painted but you’ll still need black acrylic paint for the detail parts. Paint code can be found in online manual.
Be sure to get everything you need in one go. Lots of the extras are only a couple of quid but double that in postage.

+1 for an aftermarket bearing kit. You can get an actual bearing set for about a tenner on eBay if you search the chassis model, much better than the plastic bushes that Tamiya ship as standard. As Clubby says, so easy to fit as you're building rather than after you've built it. Tamiya even put the alternative part numbers on the instruction sheets so you can't really get it wrong.

The bundle kit looks perfect to get you started, I got a similar one with my Unimog. I ended up buying an extra high capacity battery too (which I knew I'd use as I planned to get another kit anyway) and the servo that my kit came with was made out of cheese so only managed a couple of snowy runs before self destructing.

Enjoy!

You recommend the metal seal bearings over rubber ones ?

I went for rubber. More drag but better sealed against dirt if going to be rallied. Had metal on my first build but replaced the wheel bearings pretty quickly with rubber as you could feel the grittiness. Left the drivetrain ones as they are pretty well tucked away. Will eventually replace when needed.
The ones above are the kit I bought and arrived quickly.
24 bearings in it, 4 pretty small peculiar sized ones for the driveshaft. £15 isn’t bad.

@plus-one I splurged on a nice set (but overpriced) of alloy Tamiya ones on eBay. I think Modelsport has Tamiya CVAs due in about the same time as your kit. So much incoming stock is for back orders first I didn’t want to wait as I already had the car kit.
Yeah Racing alloy ones on eBay get decent reviews if not quite as nice as the Tamiya ones. Around £25 a set. Think it’s the 55mm ones you need. Lots of info on the Tamiyaclub website. Forum is free to join, but prepare to lose hours down that rabbit hole!

Oh, that's delightful 🙂.

Just to let you know, Avenham Park in Preston is quite good fun..
APART FROM THE FESTERING BAGS OF DOGSHIT THROWN OFF THE MAIN PATHS INTO All NICEST BITS OF SINGLETRACK AND RC BASH SPOTS. Even the responsible dog owners were complaining.

Turned a potentially lovely afternoon into a bit of a nightmare.
Found some great places (BMX jumps over the bridge, on the right, for example, and the singletrack off to the left by the stream) that had literally hundreds of them strewn around.
You couldn't let kids play anywhere in the park away from the paved paths.
The whole place stinks.
Shame, it could be a fantastic public space.

Bah.

I reckon i have spent more money on my little colt and the maverick ion than they both cost me originally.
The perils of letting a 5 year old pay i guess, but the cost is worth it.
Have told him once he can control them well i will get a 1:10 crawler so we can build obstacle courses round the garden

Bought some flexible 1.6mm polycarbonate sheet and I'll try and make a bubble canopy for my Mad Bull "convertible".

I've got a spare body shell too that I'm going to paint up in some sort of splinter camouflage scheme. Don't know whether to go for a Swedish green/brown/black or a Russian blue/blue/grey.

well Merak, that is amazing.

I have the original build of this having used and abuse it as a teenager... I dug it out my parents garage a while back and it looks very sorry for itself now! I might be forced to actually buy a new bodyshell and spruce it up!

So I 've had a go at tidying up my broken Mad Bull body shell.

I got a 15x15cm piece of 1.6mm flexible plastic off eBay for a couple of quid with a view to making a bubble canopy. I also took the opportunity to clean up the paintwork.

I'm quite pleased with the result, however the canopy is too clean to show up in photos! Don't know how well it will cope with the next roll over though.

I've also started on painting the spare shell. It'll be a Hi-Viz / dazzles camo mash-up.

Orange and yellow on and masked. 3 greys to follow.

Nice builds everyone. Very nice.
That scale art mog is daft money, agreed.
Got hold of some scrap 4mm alloy sheet built a low CG crawler chassis with it. So transplanted the Mauler axles and gear box into it and Tamiya BlackFoot hard body. I got lucky and it works well. Build inspired by the axial 1/24th scale C10 .Just got body detail and a big grill/bumper to make. Will treat it to some axial axles maybe soon.
Will be able to go out for a crawler session with the kids soon. And might be able to follow theirs now.
Another rainy afternoon in the shed🥸

Well done @plus-one. I made an arse of my decals as Tamiya’s “instructions” for these are indecipherable. That and their position on the sheet bears no resemblance to where they go on the car. Consequently I have a nice understated white escort with black Phat Bodies wheels, instead of the baby blue ones. Actually looks really good. Only thing missing is the body accessories, mine were missing from the box. Contacted them but still waiting for follow up response after the initial “we’ll look into it”. So I’m missing the mirrors, bumpers, but most annoyingly the inside light buckets to fit the leds I’ve waiting.

So converted my wl.toys 124019 to brushless 4500kv. Still running a 2s. Its frighteningly fast, easy 45ph (seen same set up doing 50s with foam tyres) and a lot of fun on the estate grassy bit.

How cool would it be to do a Binky shell? Could be a real challenge though with the pearl stuff.

Not an Escort shocker. I've shoehorned an HPI body onto a Tamiya 2cv M05 chassis hence the jaunty mounting posts. I would have trimmed them but I need them for the 2cv.

It's a leap of faith for mounting/drilling..

It was an experiment. The HPI is a three piece body which was a pain in the arse to be honest. The lexan is as tough as old boots compared to Tamiya. The decals were hateful brittle things that although pre-cut didn't like heat or repositioning.

It's for sale like all the rest, I'm going to do a Cossack Escort next..

Innit?

Day off today after a particularly shitty week.
Took the Lunchbox down to the park and came home smiling again.

I think, after a few years of pissing about with these things, that slow and stupid is actually more fun than fast and furious.

Sold some old film camera gear so have shelf space.......

......quite fancy a Wild Willy..😀

Arses. Snapped an axle on a tank after a particularly heavy afternoon of skirmishing.

Best start looking for spares 🙁

The Brexit farce rears its ugly head. Again.

The spare part that I need costs €2.95, but it is only available via HengLong.de in Germany. However, they won’t accept my order because of the Brexit VAT situation unless I spend €130. I don’t really need 44 spare suspension arms, so they have cancelled the order and refunded me.

The only UK solution was to buy a complete lower tank hull complete with 10 road wheels and 10 suspension arms, which are plastic rather than metal. So I’ve gone with that.

£34 to buy something that I only want a tiny piece of, that would have previously cost less than a fiver. Did they put that on the side of the bus? No they did not.

On a more serious note getting spares for anything from Europe is going to be a pain.
