A large breed might approach that of a big (and in most cases completely unnecessary) SUV.
Our last dog was a beautiful Newfoundland called Bell who we took in when she was four. Odd thing with giant breeds is people always say things like “I bet she’s a handful and eats you out of house and home” when in reality she didn’t eat a great deal, spent 99.99999% of the time asleep and used to try and hide when you got her lead out!
When we first got her I took her to the vets and as part of a general health assessment he asked me to get her to run to me in the car park. I looked at him and we both burst out laughing. Never going to happen. Might’ve managed a bouncy walk if there was the possibility of a treat involved.
Here she is acting as a pillow for Funk Jr when he was a baby. She was fantastic with him. Just had to make sure he wasn’t in the immediate vicinity when she wanted to lie down. She’d just collapse like a building going down.
Oh yeah, 5 pages....
Dogs are great. My two Landcruisers.
All this talk of Land Cruisers... I'm activeky thinking of getting a new Land Cruiser to transport me and my dog (+ a load of other shiiite) when the new model finally arrive in Blighty.
I'll be able to compare and contrast the benefits, pitfalls and respective operating costs on a proper basis.
What I know already is
- the CapEx for the LC is about 50x that of the Lab.
- Insurance is similar.
- Don't need an MOT for the 1st 3 years on the LC.
- dog MOT and 12 month service is a similar price.

You sound very much like my dog, he too likes to dig a hole and refuse to get out of it 🙂
If I put my mind to it, he could probbably become a half decent truffle snuffler!

Doug continues to monitor this thread.
For a stupidly animated and vocal doggo IRL, Doug is not good at expressing himself in photos.
You can’t purport to care one bit about the environment and own a dog.
Here's Bruno doing his bit for the environment by catching the number 64 into town instead of getting in the car.
Image stored on Google Photos which has a CO2 cost of ~11.7 grams/year according to the Institute of Energy and Technology. That's equivalent to the CO2 emissions of your average Land Cruiser travelling around 48 metres. Maybe double that actually, now that it's hosted by STW as well. Which begs the question: can we purport to care about the environment whilst posting on STW...?
Its pretty obvious from pretty much every dog owner post on this thread, that the last things dogs are is pointless*. Sure, some people can get over anthropomorphic**, but I've zero doubt theres a large dose of mental health gains being made. Along with some substantial physical health benefit from being outside for a good amount of time every single day.
*Grudgingly I'd have to admit the same about those bipedal goblins loads of people seem to spawn.
**Which is a common and perfectly natural human behaviour, dogs or no dogs.
Lola eats bug-bakes, which I thoroughly recommend.
So she's probably more like a susuki jimny.
All this talk of Land Cruisers…
If you want to do it properly you have two choices for guaranteed acceptance into "THE COMMUNITY"
A) Land/Range Rover that's obviously on a lease
B) Berlingo/Kangoo or Volve/Saab Estate that's so old it's almost officially a 'classic' car. Edit, an old Jimny is also a good shout.
Failing that, you can usually get away with a cheaper older electric car with a sticker on that says "I'm green" or "solar powered".
Reports @rOcKeTdOg for trolling ... 😆
And as were watching the world burn by posting photos of dogs on chairs

One dog, no kids with the additional offset that by not having kids, there's more disposable income to allow us to make greener choices.
Plus Bella is well known in the local area, most walks take twice the time they need to as she stops to greet everyone. It's not just our mental health she helps.
Earlier this week, the wife was told by the company director, to bring Bella into work as she'd not seen her for a while.

They’re completely irrelevant in modern society and a waste of the world’s resources in a climate crisis. They are also a pain for people who don’t have dogs."
I couldn't agree more.
I like dogs (why wouldn't I? They've been selectively bred over 20,000 years to make us want to feed and shelter them.) But their owners are not doing a great job on their behalf on this thread. There are negatives to having so many around and "yeah but what about your kids?" and "lol look at his little face" aren't hugely reassuring arguments
Being stressed at the dog-sitter, while we were on holiday. He doesn't do chairs, just sofas
At home we wait until the blanket is in place.
Ah good to see the miserable ****s are reinforcing their numbers.
Anyhoo, me napping with my old Lurcher and my mates Jack Russell.
All rescues by the way, like every dog I'll post. But I'm sure some would prefer they where euthanised.
There's no area's of joy now on this forum - any little piece of positivity and someone comes along and ruins it. This is as far removed from the Gaza/Politics threads as you can get.....but nope, it still gets dragged into the trolling shit

Dog in front of log burner.... 😬 😬 😬

There’s no area’s of joy now on this forum
Yip. There are just some genuinely awful and miserable people
The dog. Approximately the size of a stout artisan loaf. Exact Breed mix uncertain, his Jack Russell Mother lived on a Welsh farm and entertained 'visitors'.
Is an absolute pest in pubs because people won't leave him alone and generally he gets handed round the tables for selfies and crisps. We can't afford to eat in restaurants.
The Land Cruiser*. 28 yrs old, doesn't leak on the carpet or smell of vomit. Anymore.
A dog has the same annual environmental impact as a Toyota Land Cruiser.
Doubtful. I'd need to see the peer reviewed piece of academia that supports this.
You can’t purport to care one bit about the environment and own a dog.
Ooh ooh.....I both can, and do!! Dog owner and Greenpeace activist.
In order - Tyson, our daughters dog who unfortunately died last week - a support in bad times,
Lola, a rescue terrier cross, happy as long as she knows where we are!
Dennis, terrier cross, who still doesn’t know his name..
As much as I like dogs. It has to be said that post-Covid there's been a marked uptick in pretty poor behaviour (both owners and dogs) I'll be relived when that starts to settle down again. There's some folks that shouldn't have ever been allowed anywhere near owning one. I read there's been over 3 million dogs introduced to households in 2020 and beyond, and already 5% of those have been abandoned. That's 150,000 dogs...
Lola, just turned 5. Our old lab Murf made it to 15. Wouldn't be without one, would like another one but that's an ongoing discussion. Lola would definitely pee on a land cruiser and make a compelling case why the driver should part with his sandwich.
"You can’t purport to care one bit about the environment and own a dog."
Owning a dog is precisely why I care about the environment.....and actually do something about it.
I read there’s been over 3 million dogs introduced to households in 2020
You have to be very careful with figures like this. There is no official record/register of dogs, so you have to use various methods to calculate a 'best estimate'. There has been a change in methodology recently, which is a large factor in the post 2020 dog ownership boom. Ownership has certainly risen, but probably not by anything like that amount.
Back to dogs are pointles, they are not. My dog plays a significant part in maintaining my mental health, if you think that's pointless I cant help you further.
Eric the greyhound in his happy places.
Firstly on the beach at Harlech and second in the hills around Carding Mill Valley.
This is Henry. He is a pure Breton Cheese Hound. They were originally bred by independent French Brie producers to detect the approach of a flat twin engine, which was used in the Citroën Ami's favoured by inspectors of the Agance de Food Standards conducting surprise hygiene inspections. They could provide their handler with up to 4 miles of warning, which for a old Citroën could be as much as an hour to hide the good stuff!
Once one of the most popular Northern European working breeds, their numbers went into sharp decline after the introduction of the naturally aspirated XUD Diesel Peugeot 205.
His coat is kept curly by giving him a small glass of red wine and an unfiltered cigarette on 14th July every year.
Ownership has certainly risen, but probably not by anything like that amount.
Yeah I'm probably guilty of confirmation bias, but at the same time, I will pretty much draw a conclusion by either 1. a cock-a-poo named something like "bubbles" or 2. owners who're are dressed in white duvet coats and are apparently confused by how leads work.
When I'm King etc, etc...
2 years past Monday since Oscar came to live with us. He was bought by mother to help with my mental support. The last 6 months we’ve been side by side almost everyday, I would have really struggled far more without him. To me he is far from pointless, he is my best buddy, my comfort when I’m alone and my light when I’ve been in a very dark place.
Back to dogs are pointless, they are not. My dog plays a significant part in maintaining my mental health, if you think that’s pointless I cant help you further.
Yup, very much not pointless or at least no more pointless than 8 billion humans. Barney, without fail is excited to see me every time I set foot in the house, even if I've only popped out to the garage for five minutes 😀 He makes me smile, a lot.
Barney, without fail is excited to see me every time I set foot in the house,
That never gets old does it?
She heard the car door.
I've often quoted the well known, "the more people I meet, the more I love my dog."
Some contributions to this and similar threads are reinforcing that somewhat.
It's not just about dogs, but there seems to be a growing culture of "I don't want/don't have, so you shouldn't either".
Chances are, if any poster on here even meets my dog, it will be the ones that want to, not the ones that don't.
That never gets old does it?
No, never. My wife can set the clock by him, 5 o'clock and he's off to the front window to watch for me cycling back down the drive, as soon as he sees me he races back through the house and beats the shit out of his toys, picks his favourite for the day and then waits by the back door for me, playtime!
@relapsed_mandalorian, that is a proper greyhound butt on display there, love it.
We lost our 15 year old westie in September 2022.
We weren't intending to get another dog then this little fella turned last November.
He was being fostered by an elderly friend of a friend, after his owners had been taken into care but she was struggling.
Asked if we would take him.
All this talk of badly behaved dogs I don't get.
We live in a coastal village in Northumberland. It's always full of dogs. Everywhere is dog friendly, all the pubs, local shops. There is literally 100's of them. I can't remember any badly behaved ones. Unless you mean just existing?
People who don't like dogs ain't my kind of people. Fact.
Some people who do like dogs ain't my kind of people, but I probably like their dogs.
I give up. Tried like three times to
Quote, add a picture and say something. Can achieve one before it bins it.
These is a reason I don't need sertraline. That reason has four legs.
I just use that post image website and use "hotlink for forums"
Yep - use Postimages website then just copy the 'Direct Link' code on here...

Seen it recently. The staff asked the people to leave with their dog if they didn’t get it to behave.
"The staff asked the people to leave with their dog if they didn’t get it to behave."
So the problem was dealt with?
We have a gift shop, we are dog friendly.
The biggest problem we have with dogs, are wagging tails potentially damaging stock. However, it hasn't happened yet, has with human customers though.
Precisely.
Which shop do you have?
I don't want to be controversial but we had dinner in The Crown Inn, Humshaugh a couple of weeks ago (recently voted best pub in Northumberland). Our table was next to 2 other tables with dogs. They behaved impeccably, my face wasn't bitten off and no faecal deposits in the vicinity.
Canine contrarian bastids...all of them 🙃
All this talk of badly behaved dogs I don’t get.
Most dogs, they're fine, I had a lovely chat with a bloke the other week who was taking 5 standard poodles out! Some on a lead some off, they were all really nice dogs, the owner was telling me all about them, he couldn't have been more proud, it was great.
Just a few weeks ago, I was 'chased' by a Cock-a-poo on the trans -Pennine. It wasn't doing any harm, just running alongside me (ok, it did try to bite my ankle at first, but it mostly just wanted to run) All the while I can hear it's owner shouting at it to come to heal. The dog has zero concept, clearly not been trained at all...Last year, when this happened to me, I turned around and "took" the dog back to its owner (who glowered at me like it was somehow my fault) nowadays I just see how far it'll run with me, I reckon my record is about three quarters of a mile...
It happens frequently enough that it's a thing...
