I was trying to describe it to a mate at work, the bass one that starts after the intro. I know nothing about instromints.
Hmmmmm, this is my semi-educated guess:
The bassline is, errr, a bass guitar.
The strummy bit that starts the tune is some kind of single coil electric guitar (telecaster or stratocaster) on the bridge pickup through a low-to-middle depth phaser effect and a clean amp.
The other guitar 'in the middle' is some kind of budget cheap vintage guitar with single coils in the 'middle' position through a clean amp. A 'Danelectro' or maybe just any really ancient guitar from the kays catalogue circa 1970.
there are few proper guitar types what do it for a job though, (tadeuszkreiger, plumber, guitarhero) -they may spot this thread and give you a more accurate idea.
Had to stick headphones in to hear any bass at all on this netbook, but it just sounds like a pretty standard bass guitar to me, maybe a little sustain on it but nothing major in terms of sound processing.
The bass is just an electric, fretted four-string plugged straight into whatever is being used to record. Doesn't sound like a mic'd amp and there aren't any obvious effects being used. The track may have a little reverb on it, but it sounds very dry. They've gone for lo-fi; but it's not a very good recording, in my opinion.
Ta, just wondered if it was some 'special' kind of bass or something.
I was trying to describe the sound but it didn't register as a normal bass guitar.
What are you listening to it on? That may be the problem.

It's only remarkable for how unremarkable it is. Just tell your friend to imagine any electric bass plugged directly into their home stereo.
