[#10225368]

For a few reasons I've decided I want to buy a Macbook Air (or possibly a Macbook). I like Apple kit so am not looking at any other makes ATM.

It looks like a new model may be out soon - Apple are selling them for just under £1k but John Lewis have them at £800 with 2 years warranty and 12 months interest free. Am I mad thinking about buying one with the new model due out "soon"?

Interestingly the local Apple refurb shop are still selling 2015 Airs with 4gb memory, 1.6 processor and 128 SSD for £500 so the JL deal doesn't look too bad!

You’ll get a better deal on the old one when the new one is out.

And make friends with a student. 15% discount on MacBooks I think.

My sons at Uni but it's 15% off the Apple price which is still more than the John Lewis price and no interest free!

All depends on whether they speed bump the current Air, or introduce a new, more expensive, higher res shorter battery life, no i/o ports, zx spectrum keyboard, slower version…

…I have to make the same decision.

Interested in this also, need to get 2 X something for my youngest who've just started sixth form.

Eldest got a mbp but I can't see any point in big drives now seeing as everything's online.

shark bait - both of my kids had 2011 Macbook Pros from a local refurb store - both going strong after 18 months and only cost £450 with a 256 SSD fitted! I was going that way myself but want to get away from carrying a heavy laptop and my iPad when I go away with work

I got my MacBook Air from Amazon, £670 for the 128gb/8gb model on pre-order. Hang on for the new one and it'll drop back down again I'm sure.

My wife bought one 2 months ago, she loves it, as long as you are aware that it's getting long in the tooth and due an upgrade, she knew this and wanted one before the upgrade because you can bet you will loose all the useful ports to be replaced by usbc and the current one still has a MagSafe charging point. My daughter has a MacBook Pro with usbc and it's a pain needing to use adapters to use memory sticks and any other things you may want to use. Old style keyboard, battery life, ports, MagSafe all good and likely to disappear in the refresh. Don't wait too long!

I got my Wife a second hand 13" Air a couple of years back for her writing - she loves it, seems to have taken to it better than her Windows laptop.

I was so impressed with the Wife's that I picked up a new 13" Air with 8GB 128GB SSD just after Christmas - paid £640 with various discount codes & cash back.

I'm really pleased with it, does everything I want it too and not too shabby for editing my crap GoPro footage and a bit of photo editing.

I've added extra storage with Nifty Drive and 128GB MicroSD card - that has my 70GB iTunes Library on it - does mean I can't use the SD card slot but I have an external card reader I can use instead.

Battery will last pretty much all day depending on what I'm doing with it.

The John Lewis deal is pretty good as you get the 2 year warranty - the apple care would cost you more.

The new one will probably follow the current trend and remove all the useful ports - so I'd say go for it!

Compare an air to a MacBook or pro with retina and they look so dated now, especially the screen bezel.

I’d pay the extra and get a retina model.

I have one from around 2013. It’s been faultless and not had an easy life. Gave it to my daughter and about a MBP.  It really is better almost everywhere. The screen is amazing and I don’t mind the keyboard. USB-C is a bit of a PITA tho. I did wonder about another Air but the new ones looked pretty similar to what I had.

Am sat typing this on a 2015 i7, 256 and 8gb Air i've just  bought s/h for £460 - its immaculate and  I'm really pleased so far - enough of a saving over the new ones at JL and still a decent spec.
