I need to get an old chest freezer out of my parents cellar.ย  It needs breaking up as they have had building work done around it since it was put down there.

They have just had the gases professionally removed and so now it needs to be broken.ย  Anything I need to worry about, best tool for the job - sledgehammer, angle grinder, reciprocating saw?ย

Start by removing the lid (assuming the hinges are exposed), then, if it was me, I'd be looking at carefully splitting the sections along the external seams using a crowbar. Failing that, split the outer from the inner in a similar manner in order to remove the internal shell and insulation. Then, with just the outer shell left, I might then be tempted to use a power tool, but I'd proceed with abundant caution (and proper safety kit).

Just pray that it's not using the cheapest of the cheap polystyrene insulation.

Last one i broke up did, was like being in a snowstorm, found bits of it everywhere, for weeks. (i only volunteered because the previous one had used some higher density stuff that cut up easily and neatly.)

Half fill it with boiling water.

Slam the lid down and sit on it to ensure good seal.

Carry imploded chest freezer out.
