If you are still having issues could I ask you to try something? In Chrome. Open an incognito window. Leave 3rd Party cookies on (There's an option to turn them off - that will not work). Then login with your account details and report what happens.

Can you at least make it so it changes colour all the time automatically?

Mark tried this and it does inded stop the privacy pop up. Hoorah! Hope that points you to a permanent fix as it would be a PITA to have to open an incognito page just for this site and log in every time!

No change here other than the pop-up now being blue!
FFS
🤦🏻‍♂️

I should add that is on Android with Opera browser. On Ubuntu/Chrome now and it's fine.

@mark Yes, it looks like the incognito window approach you suggested appears to have worked. I've not returned to the un-incognito one yet, it was too much of a pest

Incognito is not the long term fix but it does suggest that we need to clear out some old legacy cookies from our previous ad/server setup. So try going to Chrome > Clear browsing data and then just select the cookies option. Hopefully you should find that it works in ordinary browser mode and not just incognito.

@mark He shoots, he scores!

Worked fine. Can't see this cookie killer but I'm not so worried about that now.

Incidentally this has also fixed [s]a lot of[/s] some issues with missing images and molgrips' merc thread [s]now appears to work properly[/s] nope, still broken. Some weird stuff going on there but not complaining.

I know this will annoy those involved but why oh why is this site so problematic so often ? Is it money related or staff related or perhaps both? Something else? Never had so many issues with a site ever since the web first fired up. Love the forum and it would be terribly missed but jeez I've been using it for 15yrs and so many weird technical issues I have to wonder why?

This issue is a change of ad service provider. We have moved to a provider called Ezoic. They do more than just put ads on the page - there's a lot of optimisation going on. It's a slow process to migrate from one complex system to another and when it's all done it will have take over a month. The complexity is due to us having a very large database of millions of posts all bundled up with a membership system that runs the subscriptions for both online and print. It's not an excuse but it's pretty complex and making big changes involving lots of systems all while trying to keep the site running is tricky. It's not a staff issue, it's a complexity issue. We have out two tech guys working with counterparts at Ezoic to get everything in place. We are starting to see light now though. The next task is caching and that starts on monday.

Why do this? Well ultimately it is a better system that will generate more money for us than the previous systems.

Will I still need to close adverts to view pages after the changes? the option is adblock software and Ezoic will hurt if everyone resorts to that.

The vignette ad should be no more than once per visit.

It's worth pointing out that all the settings we have for ads (and the complexity fo needing to show a different profile (ads) to one user group and none to another) relies on standard web technology - namely cookies. If you have settings in your browser that alter how your browser deals with cookies then that could potentially cause issues that we can't control. Clearing cookies from your device/browser should clean out all our old cookies and allow the new ones to settle in. The cookie killer we have on our site that some have used will only clear out Singletrack cookies ie. the ones we set ourselves but it won't clear out any from our old ad networks and Ezoic.

Well its just happened to me

there was I smugly thinking I don't get this

then next visit - logged out, privacy pop up. all non essential cookies refused as I do on every site, privacy pop up again, logged out again, logback in and it worked but the shadow ad ( white banner) across the bottom of the screen

Prechecked "legitimate interest" seems a bit off to me as well - I thought it was all supposed to be opt in not opt out.

I have no idea but I don’t know of any other website this bad. It wasn’t much better when I was a subscriber to be honest so don’t fall for that one.

Today has been fine unless I follow a link to an external site (forum PSAs for example), but when I click back to STW it goes apeshit again.
iPad/Safari.

Anecdotally, Safari does seem to be a persistent problem child.

Just to reiterate what Mark said: the STW forum looks basic. Believe me, it is not. I have stared into the belly of the beast and it would shit up HP Lovecraft.

I wasn't getting the cookies thing, now it's every other time I click/do anything on here. This website is an absolute shitshow.

Android and Chrome FWIW

Subscribe they said, then all the issues will magically disappear. 🤥

The cherry on the shit-cake is any objections to 'legitimate interest' are not being saved.

It just happened to me too.

I'm gathering as much info as I can and providing it to our tech guys both in house and at Ezoic. They won't be able to get on it until the morning and there's not a great deal I can do myself but I did just clear my browsing data, including cookies and it stopped the CMP popup on every page. I know it's a right PITA right now but i'm pretty confident we'll have it fixed in the morning. In the meantime try a cookie clear out.

Mark

Maybe that's the problem. Is there not off the shelf forum software?

@mark just as an aside referring to my earlier post, I found out the reason why I'm not seeing a lot of posted pictures is because I had a facebook container blocker running, if you get anyone else complaining that's worth a look.

@everyone_else I run a cookie request blocker called 'I Don't Care About Cookies' on Firefox. It's really good.

Seems to have sorted itself for me now. I logged out then logged back in again and the constant pop up hasn't reappeared.

Turn it off, then turn it on again 😆

I’m logged in and have ads everywhere. Tried clearing all cookies and logging in again and I still have ads. I’m particularly unimpressed by the ads on the login page which seem to dump a load of tracking cookies so your data can be collected even if you paid not to have ads. Nice. Latest Safari on latest iPadOS so yes, edge case again that no-one would test.

It's stopped for me now. I've kinda given up with regards to my data but this site is the one I'd be most worried about.

I remember being lambasted when I didn't pay and complained, well now as a paying customer I'd say it's pretty rubbish and bollocks to installing a specific browser on a specific os just for 1 site.

Just briefed our tech team on the weekend issues and pointed them here. They are about to lift the hood and see what needs fixing.

Sorry again.

Full member here, getting the same problems, automatically logged out, adverts even when logged in. Does anyone from STW staff actually read these threads? Just in case they do.... I literally only pay my subscription to avoid adverts. I don't even read the digital version of the magazine which, ostensibly, is what the subscription is for since it is not optimised for phone screens which make it a right PITA to read on one. So, since I'm paying directly to have ads removed on the forum why the fk am I still having to put up with these crappy ads? There is absolutely no way I'm going to renew my subscription if this isn't fixed (and at least see some response about it from the site managers). Way to build your business model guys, charge for a service (an ad free experience) then totally fail to deliver it!

Yes. In fact I've been posting on this thread all weekend. See the post right before yours.

The report/help page (bottom left on desktop) does feed directly to the inbox of our techs. They haven't been working over the weekend but they are catching up on everything now.

update. Ads on the login page should now have gone. That one was a case of adding a wildcard to the filter. It was set to disable ads on the page ../login/   but since there's a redirect added to the url to send you back to the page you came from after you login that needed an extra /* at the end to work. That one I did myself. The main ads when logged in issue is more complex so it won't be me that fixes that. But I will keep you updated through the day.

Your point is correct, but poorly delivered.
