From this collection of blurry and closely cropped camera phone pics, can anyone tell me what I spotted on my walk to work this morning? I'm guessing sparrowhawk or peregrine falcon...

That is indeed a sparrowhawk. I'm going to guess male though bit hard to tell with the blurry pics.

Could you tell what the prey is / used to be?

At first I thought it was pigeon but looking at the pics (there's animated frames taken) I think it might actually be a rat, but it happened too quick to be certain.

Good spot anyway *thumbs up*.

I saw half a dozen buzzards and a red kite yesterday all circling the same field while a tractor turned the hay over. Not a good day to be a rodent in that field!

I'd say female sparrowhawk, males tend to have orangey chests

Just wanted to add, that this was in central Ipswich, so quite surprising to see

Definitely a Sparrowhawk and they’re reasonably common in towns / cities.
