It came from the garden, scared the daylight out of my little one when it walked over her face as she was dozing off and then tried to hide. To no avail, my trainer was very, very lethal.
Question - how do I stop them from coming into the flat? Last year we had a lot of them (and a spider the size of half-a-thumb isn't welcome), don't want this to repeat.
encourage birds by putting bird feeders out they'll gobble the little critters for you
Get Obama round to kill em.
Find an old lady who swallowed a fly?
I don't know why, she swallowed a fly,
perhaps she'll die?
Loads of birds in the garden, they sh*t everywhere.
The spiders are fine outdoors, not in my flat.
Can I buy anything to discourage them from entering their flat of doom?
Sign on the door-"No spiders"?
Why do you want to kill them? They are not doing any harm to you, I'm sure it did scare the little one but then surely anything walking over a small childs face will scare them?
Okay time for a serious answer, yes, use conkers. Place them near your doors and in corners of rooms - no more spiders. Sorry but I can't explain why but I can testify it works. 🙂
Loads of birds in the garden, they sh*t everywhere.
Perhaps you shouldn't have a garden. What with spiders 'walking around' and birds 'sh*tting everywhere'
........... and I bet the cheeky ****ers do their irritating 'singing' as well.
Get a Dog, mines just killed a spider in the kitchen which I didn't spot! Good on him, I hate the little/big ****ers! I say hate but it's more of a strange sh1t my pants obsession with them, why do I, when seeing one in the house have to kill it before I do ANYTHING else!!!!!!?????
I doubt there is much you can do in any house.
Ps I am scared of spiders!!!!! yet hate flies more?
why do I, when seeing one in the house have to kill it before I do ANYTHING else!!!!!!?????
Because you are human and that's what human beings do ............. Kill.
I like spiders, don't like flies.
ive got a friend whos cat eats spiders... Apparantly she holds it up the ones on the cieling and its like a hoover. Wierd cat.
Flat is rented, no animals allowed. Apart from humans. Will try conkers, thanks for the tip.
Spiders die in my flat, stay alive in my garden.
Birds shit all over the place but CD's hanging in the garden scare them off. I don't want my kid's toys covered in birds poo.
BTW I love animals, especially lamb chops and chicken thighs.
there's some kind of oil they don't like, can't remember it though? paint it along all your entry points or something!
its peppermint oil.
Birds shit all over the place but CD's hanging in the garden scare them off.
You also want to collect all the loose twigs and moss from your garden and hide them in your shed. That'll stop the buggers from stealing them to make their nests.
I like spiders, but if you must, we used a dog flea spray from the vets a few years ago (Virbac Indorex Spray), you spay across every entrance, and every bug that crossed that line died! nothing got further than 6 inches from the line!! On another note for those fans of spiders, i have brushed them off the face of both my children whilst they were sleeping and quite a few times off my wife, fortunately she does not believe me so 'it did not happen'
You can buy plug in devices that emmit an ultrasonic wave that creepy crawlies dont like and they vacate the property. Takes roughly 2 weeks after plugging them in.
Stoney - which one have you used?
Why are Poms so het up about spiders? The spiders here are pussy cats.
I'm puzzled about what the big one under our sink lives on - never seen an insect anywhere near the toilet.
Get one of these, it'll get rid of the spiders for you
is killing a small animal just because you have the power, equivelent to killing another human because you have a biger gun - or they are weaker?
No thomthumb, it's not about 'power'. I have 'the power' and yet very rarely feel the need to kill.
It must something else.
Although I'm more mystified how Hairychested manages to go riding singletrack ...... what with the potential to encounter birds flying freely, spiders, and all sorts of other nasty non-human lifeforms which roam freely on the face of this planet, the whole experience must be truly distressing.
Spiders rock. Fact.
ernie, get real. In a second you'll pronounce me a murderer as I've just dealt with another one.
Old saying, ‘if you want to live and thrive let a spider run alive’
ernie, get real.
What me get real ?
I'm very happy living in the real world. And I have no desire at all to live in an unnatural sterile environment.
.
So tell me Hairy, how do you cope on the trails ?
OK maybe CDs left hanging on branches to scare off 'sh*tting birds'. But what about spiders, beetles, and earthworms ? Chemical solution ?
hairychested- MTFU. AFAIK there are no indigenous spiders that are dangerous to humans in any way, although I may be wrong. The spiders are going to do you a favour- eat the sh!t feeding flies. Come to terms with them- perhaps a bit of aversion therapy. And please try not to pass your irrational aversion of them on to your little one.
Spiders= good
Rather than kill the poor thing, which is just looking for some invertebrate or insect to eat, try getting a glass and a piece of card, put the glass over the spider then slide the card under the glass. Take far from the house and release. There are around a dozen or so spiders in the UK that bite humans, the False Widow being the most noticable one. Just thank the Deity of your choice we don't have Violin Backs or Brown Recluse Spiders in this country. They really like human habitations, like under loo seats, and the bite from a Brown Recluse can be a truly agonising thing. It doesn't kill, just makes you wish it had.
There's nowt like a Redback for pain.
Funnelwebs can kill you.
Pommy spiders are cuddly.
i dont have any tips apart from conkers which i fail to believe works but you do know your daughter will now be scared of spiders for the rest of her life..... why do u think im scared of em! same thing but i was asleep in my bed and one was on my face.
GC, thanks for the Heckler, loving it! BTW She's ok with spiders in the park, not at home.
Some of you miss the point - it isn't me I'm concerned about, it's a 27-month-young daughter of mine who doesn't sleep because there might be a spider "walking on my bed".
Ambrose, MTFU? To a baby? You ****in' idiot!
it's a 27-month-young daughter of mine
Off topic but, when do parents start counting their childrens ages in years rather than months?
btw, it's my wifes 360 month birthday next month. 🙂

Can't you show her that it's not a problem? Take this as a springboard to show her stuff about spiders she'll be interested in. Films, books you can read with her, trips to nature reserves, etc. Don't confront her fear, or run around trying to protect her from it, because either of those options simply reinforce it. Channel the issue into something useful instead.
If you make a big deal of it, which it sounds like you have, then your daughter will just inherit your fears. That's how phobias develop.
Not to mention that, as ernie rightly points out, you are teaching her the decidedly ugly human trait of "If you don't like or understand something, then kill it immediately."
Exactly.
Show yer kid they're harmless by picking it up and putting it outside (in a glass if you have to). My bloomin' mother passed her spider aversion onto me when I was a kid and it's only taken 40-odd years to get around to picking the things up (tho' the large/fast ones I can't quite manage)
Not to mention bugs are really quite interesting/beneficial (or at least, have their own little niche) - they're not there for useless friggin' people to squash 'cos they don't like 'em.
Oi Golfchick - don't diss the conkers - they really work I tell you !!
what tyger said!
Hairychested, your karma is seriously down the pan. Take care out there.
HC- the comment wasn't aimed at her, sorry if it came out that way, twasn't my intent.
