Ok
Lot of introspection and bitchyness recently. Lets not lose sight of the good things that STW does - apart from entertain on a friday morning.
Personally I have benefited from route advice - a couple of weeks ago I asked for an easy route somewhere along the northern M6 - I was given a few different routes and recommendations one of which we rode and it was just what was needed. without STW I would not have had that nice days riding.
I have also been on a good few group rides organised thru here which means I have met new people and found new local rides.
I have bought bikes and bits and gained a bit of knowledge about bikes and bits - there is almost always an answer to a question if you ask it. I even got some advice on walking in central Italy.
I have seen others be helped with difficult personal issues and seen them given some real high quality support. Its one area outside of MTBing that all of STW pulls together on.
So - STW is the sum of the people who post on it and I thank you all for adding to the richness of my life.
It never fails to suprise me with the depth of knowledge and advise available on here. I feel like I could ask anything on any subject and someone would be able to help.
stw has let me meet and ride with a very nice group of people, who i may not have ever had the chance of meeting.
Meeting people. It's what STW is for I think. 🙂
Agree with lunge - this is the ultimate 'Find any answer' forum....
I like the typeface that they use.
It says middleclasswhineycockbags like no other typeface on the net.
agree with lunge
also pictures of kittens being breastfed by humans
The naval gazing. Can't get enough of it. Its great! 😉
Seriously - I think Ton's Delamere ride on Sunday will probably sum up everything that reet gradely about this place
AND.... apparently, there's a magazine too 😀
LOL@TSY - very good squire
Advice, made lots of friends from members of past and present, had the chance to ride in areas all over the UK and a couple of places abroad, grabbed some great bargains on classifieds. Had some good laughs from threads too and some cracking support when I blubbed about my Dad being seriously ill.
The naval gazing.
Oooh, do we get to look at sailors? Goody!

This thread pretty much sums it up - One question, one answer and it was perfect.
Having given up on another slowly dying forum this place is now my contact with Britain and those who sail in her. There's lot of trafic which means there's always something of interest to read. Although some complain about the moderation I've had no issues with it since the Great Hack.
LMIRL ! Yup that's an important bit. I've an RDV at the semaine fédérale.
I've got lots of good and useful advice from here. I've got cheaper energy bills, a better bike set up, smoother coffee and I know a bear would beat a lion in a fight.
I met my partner on here, we had our civil ceremony last week, honeymoon on West Highland Way thanks to recommendations from you guys. Photos coming soon.

I cant think that there has ever been a question that has stumped the STW mah-hoosive*... thats the most impressive thing. All the world is here.
*except perhaps "What chimney pot for S****horpe"....

Fantastic! where were the invites 🙂
2) The banter
1) The people
4) The information and answers available

3) The numeric ordering of lists
Meeting mountain bike people, buying bits. Laughing at and with smart[s]arses[/s] people 🙂
[edit]I must add, this place made raising money for charity FUN 😀
Fantastic! where were the invites
I posted but only one person turned up, and now he's been banned. 😥
its not blocked at work
I've discovered I like guys much more than I thought.
I've discovered I like guys much more than I thought.
But in a good way 😉
Great trolling opportunities, plenty serious types to wind up.
Great laugh out loud moments, while trying to keep a straight face in the office.
Sharing of bike love.
I had forgotton the 'nipple' shot from the pre-cursor to the BBB - the officially recognised Singletrack Southern Festival!
It makes me feel like I really do ride a mountainbike, it's so like real life 8)

Oops. I never saw it. 🙁
Ignoring the main site, the advantages of the forum are worth it alone:
The people dotted around. In a previous job where I used to travel, I've ridden with STWers on cheeky mid-week rides all over the place.
On a simliar vein, the route knowledge. Photos to inspire, and in more recently, gpx files to follow
The general bike knowledge, especially from the trade lurkers: Brant; Jameso; Mike@dialled etc. And mad diy-ers (epicyclo, I'm talking about you)
The huge flow of stuff on the classifieds.
Another thing for me is a wider educational aspect.
we all tend to make friends with people who think like ourselves, who live in a similar world, who are a similar age.
Thru here I have got to meet both online and in real life people of very different ages and very different worlds with very different world views. I knew these people existed before but had never made friends with anyone. I have made some good friends from places that are totally alien to me. There is one guy that is my only right wing militaristic nut job pal. I am his only pacifistic pinko liberal lefty loon pal
That definitely broadens ones mind
I love reading about folks rides - especially when they are "out there"doing something more than riding a trail centre (not that I've anything against them).
If I'm being honest, I've also really enjoyed the feedback I've been given when I've written up a ride of some sort (be it on- or off-road).
Personally I like this forum...there's a good balance between interesting posts on random topics, funny posts on various things, helpful posts on bike related things, and harmless piss taking when it's appropriate. There are many people on here that I'd probably get on with offline.
Sometimes there's the genuine cry for help where someone has had a significant negative event in their life, and the forum rallies round to cheer them up...often with the same harmless piss taking.
The only down side are the malicious wind up merchants, and the people who think they're some kind of forum hero (no matter how much they claim to be doing it in jest).
But the self proclaimed 'forum heroes' don't annoy me, I just feel sorry for them. As with the obvious trolls...I don't understand how people don't realise it makes you look desperate for attention.
even though the forum seems to be a haven for a certain type (see TSY's post above) I have found lots of good info about riding and bikes, picked up a few bargains and occasionally have had some good banter.
Some time ago someone was lost at sea late one evening and the way in which people rallied round to help was heart warming.
Bullheart
Good advice and interesting opinion.
Cheap parts sent on time by honest people.
I like the general chit-chat-info-banter-arguments-loveins-pisstakes, occasional buying and selling.
I also have to remind myself that there is stuff away from the forums eg. teaching videos, product tests etc.
It's a good place 😀
I like this forum – threads vary from the powerful and poignant to the utterly farcical and ridiculous.
On a daily basis there are insightful and humorous contributions, and as already mentioned – the hive mind is a great resource to draw upon when people are being sensible.
Threads done to death and back again by the logorreheic’s can hack me off though.
I’ve met some good people on here as well.
All the best.
for me its getting to meet good folk from other areas and either be shown rides on their doorstep or ours .you can do rides that might have taken yonks of trial and error or mapreading and enjoy social banter doing it , whats not to like .and while theres a shedload of bitching and whelping on the forum people seem to treat each other better face to face and get on well in the saddle .all good, mart
I have just directly benefitted from this thread as I needed to look up logorreheic...
Good work...I learned a word today.
I'm not ashamed to say that I've learnt a a great deal from this forum.
The advice offered is almost always good, no matter what the topic - even if it is usually contradictory and varied.
And I find the range of opinions and attitudes expressed fascinating and it constantly makes me re-evaluate why I think in a particular way.
And I enjoy the banter, the debating, the sparring, and the pisstaking.
My sincerest apologies to those that don't.
Been on some great rides and met some interesting people via here. Had complete strangers offer to help me with stuff I needed. Laughed like a drain on many occasions over intended and unintended funnies. All round good stuff.
i likes it here, one minute you're posting a lolcat and then the next your emailing someone offering support through a hard time.
i especially like it when several of the funnier posters all end up messing around in the same threads together.
+1 Lunge - hit the nail on the head!
Plus I'd have never bothered trying to make Ice Tyres if I hadn't seen all the other homemade attempts here lol
Cheers Singletrack!
For me is the scope for redemption and reinvention. One can spend their time being rude to others on on thread, then put that behind them and start another one afresh, sometimes because folks have forgotten who did what, other times because folks know it was a wind up and yet other times 'cos folks know that they can be fickle and capricious.
