My lad's currently using BBC Bitesize to revise for his science GCSE.

Fantastic resource, quizs, short films and teaching all mixed together, and paid for by the BBC.

Splendid 🙂

Radio 3

Great value, especially when you consider the cost of the shite you pay for with Sky

i hardly watch tv, when my current license expires in september, i don't think i'll bother renewing it.

but...

i do like the news/commentary/comedy on radio4, and the website has it's moments, it's a shame there isn't an 'honesty-box' / paypal account i can't drop £20 in.

Got on tightwad, be good to yourself, £49 gets you a B&W/radio license for 12 whole months , < £1 per week.

They're not having any of my money whist a blind licence is more expensive than a black & white one. As said above you only need a licence for live tv and who really wants to watch all their adverts?

It's not more expensive - it's half price.

Why would a blind person need a colour TV ?

currently in NZ, it is not until you go abroad that you realise how good the BBC actually is. For all its faults it is a lot better than the alternatives.

There's not many broadcasters out there that would make documentaries on Motorways, diagrams and the History of Blues in 60s pop music. BBC Four I salute you.

On the other hand Strictly Come Whatever is a sack of steaming horse mess with glitter, I want some of my money back please.

I'm sure there's millions of fans of Strictly who say the same about Motorway documentaries, that's why the license fee is the only why to fund a public service. You have to put up with (what you think is) rubbish, so you can enjoy (what you think is) the good stuff.

I agree, well worth it. I can't remember the last time I watched something on ITV or Ch.4. The odd thing on ch.5 but they usually are reruns from Discovery.

I guess from the response, that if the BBC went to an opt in subscription service on digital, most on here would pay to receive it? I can't ever see it happening...

So, from several comments so far, the BBC only looks good because everything else is so bad?

BBC4 does some brilliant documentaries. And anything with David Attenborough, I think I've watched every episode of his series since about 1984.

I would say yes and no, it is good, but a lot of the opposition is also bad, and in some cases appallingly bad!

The problem as i see it, if you want people to subscribe or fund through advertising, you need to produce programs the majority want to watch and that are cheap. Quality is of no interest.

Like many I live an area where there is no commercial radio and the BBC is an absolute godsend.

I would go as far as to say that the BBC defines Britain.

Now if they would only get rid of that awful new homepage

The BBC is a lot like the NHS.

It has a lot of detractors, but anyone who has spent time in another country can appreciate that it's really very good indeed and pretty good value for money.
