I'm talking about anything from Emmy-Lou Harris or Johnny Cash to Willy Nelson to John Denver to Dwight Yoakum.
I quite enjoy pretty much all musical forms, but today I've moved from Tom Petty to John Denver to Emmy-Lou Harris, and now I feel like having a bourbon and smoking a corn cob pipe.
Anyone want to join me? If so, what singers or bands would you bring to the porch?

Love country music, like all kinds of music for varying reasons. People who take the mick out of country probably haven't listened to it much - its the same as rock or pop music - so varied within its genre there's something for everyone.
For me....Brad Paisley, Eric Church. I'd like to know a bit more but can never remember the artists when I hear a song I like. Dwight Yoakam too.
I do like a bit of bluegrass radio on in the background occasionally. All those fiddles and banjos make me smile. It’s intricate music.
I like a bit of Johnny Cash. Nothing else though.

That's as maybe, but I find it hard to listen to stuff I don't like the sound of.
There was a TV series - Mike Judge's Stories from the Tour Bus. Bloody brilliant. No music in it though. The Tammy Wynette one is particularly worth a watch.

Listen to a lot of Bonnie Prince Billy, Phosphorescent, Califone - that sort of stuff that gets labelled alt-country. It's miles away from the real thing, though. I have a soft spot for the Nashville sound just because my Dad is a huge fan. He grew up in Liverpool in the 50s and 60s - The Beatles, The Searchers, The Merseybeats? Never heard of them son - was listening to Merle Haggard and Buck Owens (?!)
ETA how do you embed a video on this fine site?
I like all types of music. Country AND western. Bob Wills is the king.
Yep, love all kinds of country and Americana.
Currently liking Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, and The Dead South (who hail from the OP’s homelands).
On the more mainstream front, I’m liking Chris Stapleton a lot and plenty of others I’m too embarrassed to mention. My favourite lines at the moment are “You name the babies and I’ll name the dogs.” and “Every empty beer can makes me miss her like hell, Lord I could kick myself.” 😂
First Aid Kit are my country weekness.
Listening to Tom Petty's The Live Anthology today,,,,
I used to hate Country. I thought it was awful waily, whingy nonsense. But through Bluegrass I finally found a way in. it's well worth having a listen to some of the old, old timers like the Carter Family to understand where it comes from and I can highly recommend a superb book - in the Country of Country.
Anyway for me, pick of the bunch are Emmylou Harris and Buddy and Julie Miller.
Re. music with country influences, there's plenty, Led Zep, the Stones, Elvis Costello, my hero Richard Thompson. It gets everywhere.
I'm a big Steve Earle fan
On my spotify playlist - John Prine; Johnny Cash, Blaze Foley, Chip Taylor; Mary Gauthier... Love those rich aged voices and great lyrics.
Cam, Eric Church and Kane Brown some of my favs
I hate this modern country music. They just take a Celine style song and sing it with an exaggerated accent.
If Bob Harris plays it , it's shit.
George Jones is da man.
Edit: so youtube linksaren't as simple as they were on the old forum, yet. Sigh.
Anyhoo, the link above is bo burnham doing a song about everything that is wrong about corporate country music, but the proper stuff is good.
My mum used to be a singer of country. I grew up with Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers and the likes records always playing in the house. I think Jolene is one of the finest songs ever written.
I’m more a fan of the modern alt-country stuff. Ryan Adams, Jason Isbell, Dylan Le Blanc and Sturgill Simpson amongst others.
deadlydarcy - I’m loving Nathaniel Rateliffe and the Night Sweats too. I see them more of an Atlantic Soul revival act though. It’s great how people hear different influences in the same music.
Country with a strong bluegrass feel: Trampled by Turtles and Mandolin Orange are my current faves.
I think Jolene is one of the finest songs ever written.
Jolene gets on my nerves. If your bloke's messing you around just leave him and let Jolene have him, you're better off without him... Grow a backbone woman!
Nope hate it with a passion ...and please stop labelling Tom Petty as a country artist ..
@funkmaster, yeah, they don’t fit right into a genre do they. However, on Jools the other night, the singer was rocking double denim. So there you go. 😀
I got hit with punk influenced country (or maybe country influced punk, who knows) a few weeks back, specifically 'Days N Daze' who are good fun.
Another fan of Chris Stapleton here, also Hayes Carll for a bit of redneck, Alan Jackson, Jason Isbell and the guilty pleasure of Kacey Musgraves
please stop labelling Tom Petty as a country artist
I LOVE Tom Petty, and do not label him a country artist. I would most certainly say that his sound is 'country-ish' in the sense that it evokes the American Southwest, in a way that, say, Big Country definitely don't! 😉
LOLz @ sobreity's Bo Burnham link 🙂
Saxonrider..yeah I 'll give you that one 😁

Double denim FTW! If you really like them you should check out Horse Feathers last album Appreciation
I think Jolene is one of the finest songs ever written.
Modern Nashville Country is just bad pop with dreadful lyrics. There's some great stuff out there but it gets eclipsed by the poor pop with a mullet or miniskirt durge
Steve Earle, Townes Van Zant, Cahalen Morrison and Eli West, Crooked Still, The Tillers, Justin Townes Earle and let's not forget Cowpunk Kings Jason and the Scorchers.
I like the bluegrass end of the country spectrum. Old Crow Medicine Show (obviously) and .357 String Band are my faves.
Bob Wills is still the king.
Like all the classics like Kenny Rogers , Johnny cash , John Denver an that Ilk.
Recently liking Darius rucker from hootie and the blowfish who's pushing his solo career again.
Try wagonwheel if you have not already heard his stuff

Because I'd already mentioned Steve Earle? 😉

End of thread? I'd end my own life if that was all I had to listen to.
Can't stand the dull wailing musically boring end of the spectrum that most people have mentioned, but I do like a bit of skilfully played bluegrass, and love a bit of Jerry Reed.
😀
Does Nick Cave count? That. And (for some reason I have yet to fathom) - 'Tulsa Queen' by Emmy-Lou Harris. The early live concert recording on yon Tube is quality.
I've never stopped listening to Ry Cooder's 'Chicken Skin Music' since it came out, priceless interpretations of Jim Reeves' Yellow Roses and He'll Have to Go. Good recording too for the time.
You've had a few of the classics up there, but to add a few to the list:
Old Crow Medicine Show - Wagon Wheel has got a bit over-exposed, but give the Big Iron World album a listen.
Trampled by Turtles someone has mentioned - Palomino is a good album to start with, go for Codeine or Wait So Long for them at their fastest
The Dead South - pretty much just emerging, but In Hell I'll Be In Good Company is a good song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9FzVhw8_bY
Brandi Carlile - my intro to her was on Jools Holland, with her ripping into The Story. Well worth a listen
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mF9XAs5Dmo
Cowboy Junkies - Margo Timmins voice has been one of my favourites for a very long time. They've been around a very, very long time...

That's a starter for 10 anyway...
I first heard Sarah Harmer years ago, when driving over the Great Lakes, and liked her at first listen, but promptly forgot about her. She's kind of a cool woman who would probably hold her own well on here, I think.
Having re-discovered her recently, I think my first impression is well-justified.
The first piece here is from 2005:
This second is much earlier:
Oh, another you might know already, but a different version.
Band of Horses. Not a huge fan of their studio stuff, but their Acoustic at the Ryman album is superb. The piano and cello version of The Funeral (as used in Danny Macaskill's first video) is pretty sublime
and, of course, who doesn't like Hayseed Dixie
Sarah Harmer
Now I do like a bit of folk, depending on beard and time of year. Folking classics anyone? Josephine Foster, Comus, and other spooky folk. Mmm. Nice.
I keep thinking of things I'd forgotten!!

Ain't no bluegrass without the Blue Grass Boys:
Check out Bill Monroe absolutely bossing the three second intro then just naffing off stage.
