I use W7 at work and OSX at home and have to say I find W7 more reliable. I am tempted to reinstall my MBP with W7 and get rid of OSX.

Ok, final attempt.

How about a Lavi?

iTunes is beautiful.

No it isn't....or rather it wasn't. v11 is a step in the right direction from the clutterfest, which arbitrarily broke Apple's own Human Interface Guidelines several times, that preceded it.

Wrecker

To stop your wife seeing your stuff you need separate iCloud accounts, or turn the sync function off via system preferences (This will remove all the cloud stuff on your machine, take a back-up first).
When iTunes next opens when you plug your phone, select your phone in the sidebar and uncheck (tick switched off) the open iTunes when this phone is connected option towards the bottom/middle of the page.
If your machine will run it install iTunes 11 as there appears to have been some pruning behind the scenes, doesn't run on this G5 🙁

New 27s are available from the end of the month - I think the lack of drive is a mistake, people still use DVDs and CDs for sending files out, although sites like we transfer are reducing this now. We're ordering 9 for the studio so ill letchaknow how good or bad they are after xmas

Yes. It's not as if it's going to make people change their minds and go and buy something else is it?
I also don't get the 'apple tax' argument, now I can understand that if you are poor then why pay more for a computer that isn't going to pay for itself.
But the 'tax' is paid for in a day, couple of days or week if it's helping you earn. It's a premium I happily pay.
The fact that PC's don't run the software I use very well (or at all) makes the decision easier. They are hideously ugly things too, I would quite happily leave an unused iMac in a living room but not a but ugly P.C.

My 3 month old MBP USB port has died ... hmmm (my 6 year old Dell laptop refuses to die, break or run slow). I know nowt about OS etc, but the MBP is way nicer to use from a 'premium feel' point of view.

And I'm being asked to get an imac for work ... hesitant Vs. cost but longevity appeals so interested to see how this thread goes ...

FFS not this again. Why are people who don't own or plan to buy Apple products so obsessed with them?

Ha, too true...the funniest/saddest thing is when you hear folk going on about Dyson vacuum cleaners though (and they really are s£%%^)!

As someone who isn't that computer savvy (I'm good enough to pick it up and train people on it, but I have no idea how it works) I'm always astonished when people complain about iTunes.
I used to have a basic MP3 player and used it with Media Player. It worked, but it was a bit faffy. Then I started using iTunes about 4 years ago with my first iPhone. Which just works. There's so little to actually DO to get it to work as well. I mean, you don't even have to plug the phone in with a wire any more FFS! 🙂 I put a cd in, click one button and it magically appears on the phone. That sort of thing.
I'm always truly baffled when people complain about iTunes. I really am. You know what, I think people piss around with it too much..... Leave it alone!
I downloaded iTunes 11 last night. Wowsers! That's fantastic. 🙂
I'm one of those that got sick of nursing PCs and laptops along to get them to work. I know Apple stuff is expensive, but I see where my money is being spent, it all looks and feels like a quality product to me. Not like the creaky plasticky Dell laptop (nearly £1000 worth new) I used to have, I think the value is in the quality and hopefully longevity. Last year I blew a load on a 27in iMac and it does exactly what I want: it sits there and when I sit down to use it, it's ready to work. It doesn't crash and its nice looking and uncluttered enough to sit in a corner and not get in the way. One wire, one screen, one keyboard and a trackpad. Lovely.
I look after my stuff. I'm on my 3rd iPhone (64gb iP5) and they've all lasted 2 years no bother and been worth good money come sale time. I dropped my nearly new phone and cracked the screen. I was quite ready to pay for a repair, but I was given a new one, no questions asked. Whilst I was in the store I had a quick play with an iPad mini. I don't need an iPad but the mini is such a lovely little jewel of a thing I decided to get one. So I sold some odds and sods I had lying around waiting for a rainy day and ordered one, which arrived yesterday a week faster than I was told it would.

So that's why I but Apple. It nice kit. It works as they say it does. And I cannot fault customer service like that. It's just a pity that more companies don't operate like Apple IMO 🙂

That's what I like about apple products, it's the same with Rapha. You get the added 'annoyance' value that winds up the have-nots. You can't put a value on that.

Because deep down they yearn for something better than their dell.

My 3 month old MBP USB port has died
Sorry but this seems far fetched to me :p if it's true - no biggie. Ring them and send it back for warranty repair. They might just send you a new one. Did you drop it? Unless there is a connection issue - usb ports don't just die. It's usually that some solder has fallen off or something.

On the issue of strength, my current MBP (2010) was dropped be me last year in a toilet cubicle. Was in my messenger bag, on a peg on the toilet door. The peg broke off and I watched helplessly with a mixture of toilet relief euphoria, and complete terror combined as my macbook plummeted to the ground and hit the concrete floor. It landed on it's corner and the aluminium body around the screen dog eared over the screen. Didn't crack, still closes, nothing broke. Simply amazing considering it dropped a good 5 or 6 feet onto reinforced concrete.

PP, exactly why I use Apple stuff, and have done since 1995.
Wrecker, a lot of your issues are because you are allowing it to happen, rather than taking a few minutes to switch a few options off and take control of it yourself. When I sync my iPhone, it syncs calendars, apps, books, contacts and photos. It does not sync music, because I want control over what tracks go on there. With my iPod, when I sync that, it automatically loads the latest music I've ripped into iTunes, and that's it. When I sync my iPad, it syncs calendars, contacts, apps and books, it has no music on it at all.
I have calendars and photos synced through iCloud, so that my Photostream is available on my pad at home as soon as I've taken photos on my phone, and I can see photos on my phone that have been copied onto my pad from my camera card. My books also sync so that when I'm reading a book in Kindle or iBooks, the book jumps to the last page I was reading on whatever device. I don't have any issues because I took a bit of time to set the various devices up the way I want them to play with each other.
I refuse to use iCloud for any music storage, partly because I'm a cheapskate and won't pay, but mostly because it only allows a certain amount of storage, and my current 144Gb is more than iCloud allows, plus it downgrades files to 256Kb, and mine are 350Kb, or whatever the bit rates are.
It's never a good idea to just accept the default settings on anything, be it a computer OS, a phone OS, or even a TV; taking time to carefully look at the settings and changing things will always give a better user experience, I spent an hour or so setting up my telly to get the picture the way I wanted it, longer than I spent setting up my Apple OS settings, even across three different devices.

I have to say there are lots of people who spend the cash on apple products without having an iota of knowledge about how they work, then blame the product saying blah blah blah it doesn't work, overpriced piece of crap blah blah.

iTunes 11 might change your mind.

Nope, it is still slow pile of junk that locks down all my music - and takes about 30seconds to start on an i3/6gb W7 laptop...poopy.

iTunes 11 installed on my MBP seems ok. Slight evolution and improvement of the UI. No plans to upgrade my PC version yet.
Certainly not revolutionary or worthy of heaped praise though...

W7 laptop
Of course it's going to be slower on Windows, It's not made for Windows. It's made to run on mac OS's.

I recently sold a couple of iMacs (24'', apprix 5 yrs old for a reasonable price (to someone off here). The Sony Viao I bought at the same time for around the same price - pretty much worthless.

Decided I'm not going to get an imac. Going to get a 15" mbp with i7 instead. Can't afford the Retina version right now unfortunately 🙁

I don't think the retina is user serviceable so not a bad choice to give it a miss. The standard displays are great - even better if you use them outside as all you can see is the handsome devil that purchased it 😯

Depends what your planned use is but the i7 may not be worth it either.

I wouldn't go for the upgraded mem or SSD versions as these can be upgraded more cost effectively and without voiding the warranty. Have a look at the crucial site for both and don't go higher than 8GB.

Why no higher than 8GB? I was using all 16GB of my ram on my 2012 MBP last night while working on some gopro video.

Because the half a#se version that they made for windows is rubbish and slow and memory hungry. In this case the 2 options are spend a stupid amount and replace all your windows PC's with Macs to make 1 program work properly or for them to build it properly. I guess apple favour the former.

My 2010 MBP can only take up to 8Gb, which seems a bit arbitrary as it's 64-bit so should be fine up to 32Gb.

It's not i tunes' fault that its made on and designed for macs is it? It's windows fault for being so out of touch. All they do is port the software to PC. Microsoft might even do that, I'm not sure.

So...going back to the OP's question. I have a new iMac (base spec 21") sat in the corner at the mo. Having used pretty much every mac since the late 90s (work in a design agency), I'd say it's the nicest desktop machine I've come across. Am sure the 27" will be better still.

The screen is really, really nice. Noticably better than the last gen - not just the glare (or lack of), just seems really vibrant. Speed-wise feels about the same. The older machines look amazingly boxy in comparison.

This one's actually soon-to-be my mum's, replacing an eMac which is still going strong after 8 years. In the same period my dad's been through 4 PCs, had the pain of crap AV software, backup woes etc etc. Given I'm IT support to both of them, I know which platform I'd recommend.

I only wish they'd keep the numeric pad on the damn keyboard...ho hum.

i got a macbook in 2007 new and never had one problem and ran just as fast as when i got it, untill it took a cup of water couple months ago.

safe to say its not doin so well now.

ill never go back to windows just because as time goes on they get slower and hard to deal with. i use to have to spend a whole day each month cleaning up the old pc running antivirus and that and im glad i dont have to do that any more.

ive just got the 15" retina MBP i7, 8gb ram, 500gb to replace my old macbook and its sooo light and thin. so it does not have disc drive. to be honest i never realy use it much but i have got the external one apple do just incase i need one

Did you try to rescue it using any of the old tricks? Dry rice on a towel on radiator with covers off etc? :p

If it's dead it's dead, but i've heard of mbp's and iphones suddenly coming back to life after days or weeks of the owner thinking they're dead for good lol

Well.. the gaming PC that I mentioned has (of course) found an issue with itself as all the PC's I've ever owned seem to do, repeatedly.

It worked perfectly for about 3 months, but today I got a message in the morning saying: Chassis Intrusion, Fatal Error, System stopped.

So i've done the usual days worth of trawling forums, looking for solutions and tinkering with the thing.

Removed the mobo, removed the mobo battery to reset the BIOS. Can't get into BIOS settings because the error message over rides it. No metal touching mobo components. Searched for lead that connects case sensor with mobo - there isn't one because it's a cheap ass case. Put it all back together, battery back in - nothing.

Seriously ticked off with ASUS right now. I'm going to have to send the thing back, or risk my warranty by soldering a wire between the sensor point and some other part of the MOBO to remove the message but risk overheating the MOBO if my soldering is bad or it simply doesn't work.

What a load of cack.

Sure, go ahead, buy cheap, you'll be getting the equivalent of a Halfords Apollo bike, when you could have the equivalent of a Turner.
Windows simply needs a clean out every now and then. Nobody throws macs out because they are still paying them off

Dell makes some great machines that last really well. My last laptop did 6 years fine. My current workhorse PC just gets periodic upgrades to keep it on top - small amount each year. Still better value than a Mac.

Keep kidding yourself and the world just maybe Square

All I can say about PC's is that over the past 8 years I spent £1,500 for my PC and that died
with a virus.
I then bought a Laptop £ 1,100 and that died with a virus.
Then bought another Laptop £ 600 that too died of a virus
All used with the most upto date antivirus software.

I bought my Daughter an Apple white laptop £ 800 and still going strong after 8 years
So I bought the Mac Book Pro and will NEVER go back to a PC You just don't realise
how Crap/shit a PC is until you have had a Mac.

All I can say is once when I was a PC user I shared some of the views of the PC users here
But now just ignore them
