This is one of my most favourite things, I picked it up at a car boot sale for £30.00 and to be honest I wouldn't mind if that is all its worth to be honest but, and there's always a but, I've fallen on hard times here and I can't justify holding on to something that could be worth something (its this or the bike!).
Can anyone tell me if this is worth selling? I did try finding out more about it in a few books but came up with very little.
The pattern I think is Islamic, but that's about as far I got!
The markings on the bottom, well I thought it might be related to the Hong Kong Trading Co" which would mean its pretty worthless but it doesn't match up with any of the markings they seemed to use?
here's some pictures:
Mass produced Chinese tat, not even particularly well done. Not worth more than a fiver really, tenner tops.
Chinses ceramics factories churn out billions of these things each day.
My mum might be round later; I'll get her to have a look at it, she'll know more than me.
Looks more like Hudson and Middleton. Have you checked them out?
nope, who are they?
Well, apparently they make fine bone china mugs. Maybe woth sending them an email, see if it is one of theirs, but to my untrained eye, it looks much lower quality than their stuff.
It's little details like the glazing round the base; see how it's uneven around the edge where it's been wiped? Wiped with a rough rag, quickly, then bunged in the kiln. Glaze is wiped from the edge in contact with the kiln, as it will just stick otherwise. If done with care, as would befit a quality item, then it would be a nice smooth edge, not all raggety like that.
And as for the glaze; the blue has run a lot, ruining the appearance. It may have been left for too long before firing, or done at the wrong temperature or something. Or glazed plain white, then painted.
It does look hand done mind, but then a decent piece would be neater and more refined.
Just looks like a cheap bowl someone's bought in a market on holiday, tbh.
http://www.valuemystuff.com/as seen on Dragons Den.
Yes, these guys are very good. When i first moved into my house, I found what looked like an old metal chest in the attic. I brought it down took a few snaps and sent them a photo, within a few days, they replied identifying it as a 1960's water tank.
CharlieMungus, genius. 😀
did you get much for it charlie?
yr probably right Fred, but then I like it that's why I bought it, there is something about it though...
Anyone know of an internet dbase of pottery marks?
Me mum's not coming now. Too snowing. Too cold.

might be what you're after. if not, head to a library and look at Miller's Guide - ooh look, it's online at http://www.millersantiquesguide.com/catalogue/ceramics/
Send email with pictures to Tennents at Leyburn, big auctioneers with lots of experts. They're great!
My family ran an antiques dealers dealing in ceramics for several years. Hard to tell from photos but it looks a lot like North African / Med coast tourist stuff (hence Islamic patterns and terracotta clay).
If so it wouldn't be worth very much and you wouldn't be likely to find the marks on any database, as they tend to just be churned out by small family potteries, rather than larger companies. As Elfinsafety pointed out these are hand made, but not great quality as they're maed for quantity, not quality. These sorts of potterys are still common in smoe areas and it might not be very old (even though it looks it)
It's pretty. If you like it I'd keep it, it's not likely to be worth that much
