Another selvedge jeans thread. Hiut vs Hebtroco

I sent my Huit jeans away for free repair last year and although it took a couple of months the quality of the repairs were very impressive. Different coloured thread used to colour match the wear of the jeans and all holes fixed and reinforced.

If you look at their instagram / website you can see how far they go to repair your jeans. So do factor that in.

To be honest, buy both, find out which fits you best. Winner.

I like Alpkit's Jeanius jeans, although they're slightly stretchy so not "proper jeans".

I usually get Carharrt or Howies when they have a sale on.

The Carharrts in particular are holding up very well.

The 2000-2020 period of super cheap far Eastern sourcing and shipping is what we’re now used to but in the long term it’s an anomaly.

Or at the very least... isn't the only option. Don't want to buy British made stuff? Then don't. I'm bloody glad the option still exists... it's really not that long ago that we could have fallen into the position of UK made jeans being a thing of the past (and this is only one example of many). I'm glad that never happened. I'm also realistic about the costs involved, and the price to pay.

I find Crew Clothing ones do well for fit/quality/longevity

Nudie, free repairs (I’ve got a shop near my office so simple for me). RRP is over budget but I’ve never paid that as sales / Vinted.

Community Clothing seems like a very valiant effort to make stuff here and thus deserves our support. Same goes for Brandt’s outfit of course.

Whilst I could just about "afford" to buy posh jeans (afford, in the sense that I could continue to eat, but other luxuries would have to go by the board for a bit), I don't think I could afford to wear them. The thought of damaging a £200 pair of strides puts the shivers up me and I do too much random crawling round on mucky floors, under cars, carting heavy stuff around to ever contemplate risking that much cash.

I've had good luck with Prana. a bit stretchy, crotch gussets and really deep pockets which means your phone isn't constantly trying to hoof you in the spuds.

Prana? Well I do have some 20yr+ old Prana shorts. Well a bit ragged, but still going. Also have some new Prana shorts and they haven't changed it seems, so that's good. Climbing kit like Prana does usually have a diamond cut crotch gusset so ideal for, er climbing, or doing the splits etc, but this will feel a little different to regular jeans. Alpkit Jeanius jeans are also similar.

Also see 3rd Rock, Moon etc for more crotch gusset type jeans. I usually get changed at a crag, but sometimes end up bouldering in jeans so can see the point of crotch gusset type jeans. But for everyday use, I think I am after a much harder wearing/ heavier normal pair and am happy to not have the same movement potential.

I really want to, but the sizing is mad.

@teaandbisuits

thread revival.  What's mad about the sizing?  in theory theres a size chart for each item with a load of measurements.  Are they not accurate? (I've just had that issue with another brand mentioned on this thread where the waist was 3 and 4cm larger on the half waist than the size chart said).

Should also add https://blackhorselane.com/ to this thread. At the moment they make most of HebTroCo's trousers as well as their own. They seem a bit more expensive than Hebtroco but no diffent to Hiut.  A wider range of cuts and have a few shops in London so you can actually try things on before buying.

(I know you probably can in theory with the others but they're a long way from the south east.

Can't comment on either of those brands, but I do advocate spending money on nice jeans.

I have a couple of pairs of Edwin's and a pair Big John's, all Selvedge denim, all north of £100 and all have lasted and worn brilliantly.

I also bought a pair of cheapo stretch jeans off Amazon for dirty, garage wear and they're just horrible. Badly cut, poor fit and look cheap. Even though they were about 1/6 of the price of the expensive jeans they are still poor value.

Can’t fault Hiut. I’ve 3 pairs, middle pair, 4yrs going back soon for a mend.

Latest pair were £40 second hand, but great condition from Vinted. Lighter weight denim for the summer.

No experience of those. But I have just worn out another pair of selvedge uniqlos in 1 year so thinking that spending a bit more for hopefully better longevity is the way to go. So interested in the replies to this.

Well, considering Japanese selvedge denim comes from a limited number of mills in Japan who took the original narrow mills from America when demand dictated going over to wider mills, thus losing the selvedge, you might find that a bit of a struggle; unless you’re prepared to pay for denim of a far heavier weight.

I’ve never, ever worn a pair of jeans out in a year, even back when I was wearing original shrink to fit 501’s, I’d start getting holes in places like the seat, but that took several years, so quite what you are doing to wear jeans out in that time I’ve no idea.

I mostly wear shorts through the year now, so my Uniqlo selvedge denim lasts years. I was wearing a pair this evening, I actually dressed up a bit for a meal with a friend, the ones I had on aren’t made any longer, sadly - they were slightly heavier, and had a proper button fly, but they were more expensive, they cost £75…

The rate they’re going, I’ll probably be buried in them…

I’ve got 1 pair of £30 next jeans that are probably 10 yrs old and not needed a repair yet

Are all these expensive jeans nicer quality cotton therefore more fragile ? But I thought the whole point of jeans is that they are a tough trouser for every day use?

Thanks for starting the thread OP.

I hadn’t been aware of HIUT denim. Their site’s PR vibe seemed familiar. I found this old Independent article. Founded by David and Claire from Howies! https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/fashion/features/hiut-made-in-britain-and-made-to-last-7576601.html

I understand folks exclaiming at ‘expensive’ fashion clothes, but £200 in 2025 money is about £48 1980 pounds. A point someone made earlier in the thread about Levi’s. Shame that wages have grown much slower than costs. Plus these ‘artisanal’ jeans from HebTroCo, HIUT, etc are closer to what jeans used to be.

How did jeans get to be £20 a pair? How many corners have to be cut to get them to that price point?!

I remember jeans being about £45, in 1990. And on my Saturday job Halfords wages, I wouldn’t have bought top end. Definitely couldn’t afford any UK made clothes then. That’s £110 in today’s money.

Not selvedge but for those looking for decent jeans less than £100 i really rate Vulpine, available for half rrp on Sports Pursuit. The womens have a nice 'cyclist' cut (thigh room) so assume mens are similar,  and have a few sneaky cycling features too for pub ride use.

Mine must be eight years old now, and just have a little hole in one knee.

What does "worn out" mean to people who are going through a pair in a year?

All of the jeans i have bought for the last 10 years have been selvedge - Edwin.  Initially, I was shocked by the price - but they last 4 times as long as my previous jeans - Levis. If you can live with the upfront cost - they work out cheaper in the long run.

Once my jeans are not suitable for normal wear - I do wear them to do more dirty activities, like walking the dog in the country, tidying the garden or cleaning the car.

If you're bored and want to amuse yourself for 5 minutes, do a quick image search for 'action man uniform' or similar and try to find the outfit that looks the most Hebtroco.

This one is bang on,

Must have bought my first pair* of selvedge jeans in 2000 ish? They were definitely north of 100 quid then. Fast forward to 2025 and they're not *that* much more expensive.

They still exist and still fit, albeit after multiple crotch repairs and the inner pockets being full of holes. If bootcut jeans ever come back into fashion....

My first shrink to fit 501’s cost, if I remember, about £3.50.

That was in 1968/9…

Well, inspired by this thread and knowing nothing about the Kendrick thing, I dug them out and wore them to the pub tonight. My millennial niece thought it was hilarious and called me a fashion victim. Can't win...
