I use this tablet infrequently. Is there any way to stop it spamming me with thousands of FB updates or similar for all my activity over the last few days that I've dealt with on other devices?

You shouldn't be getting FB alerts for stuff you've read on a different device.

Settings - Sound & notification - App notifications.
