Just read this piece on the BBC about preparedness for natural disasters, and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). It seems that for once Britain tops a list it's good to be at the top of.
However, some of the comments beggar belief. When did society get so selfish and insular?
Jesus, the comments make me fear for this country, might as well just post "Britain: We don't like anything brown"
It seems that this news story, and not singlemindedinlaws.com is where all the in-laws everyone's been moaning about hang out when they're not in an STWer's living room....
Im not racist, but.....

US - £6m
Japan - £3m
France - £720,000
China - £500,000
😯
Disgusting when you hear governments wasting millions yet pay peanuts to a fund that can help save lives.
I'd say our GBP 94m was too little...
I'd definitely agree with that.
Amen brother Ton
Amen +1 Brother Ton...

To be fair the link does say that "many countries still choose to give bilaterally" so the total amount they contribute won't be reflected in those figures.
Some countries like to choose who they help and emphasise that the emergency aid has come from them.
America a country that couldn't even help its own people.

Please tell us all about the utopia of the winter of discontent, the altruism of the Unions especially the ones who left schools without heating for weeks on end.
Perhaps they are all too young, Cheekyboy?Nice line thought ton!! And come on elfin, shouldn't have been a tough one for you!!
Perhaps they are all too young, Cheekyboy?
I'm not ....... whaddya know ?
Very little - it was a wind up ernie!!
I juts find it funny how so many people on STW think that the 1970s were utopia!!
Yeah, but you think the 1980s were utopia .........you maggie-loving tory boy.
Ernie - that may be a joke in return? I hope so, otherwise you have misread all my Thatcher posts spectacularly!!
[having said that 1980s did shave it by a whisker!!]
p.s. must remember to use the smileys
I don't do smileys. It adds to the mystery I find.
Certainly does!! 😉

to say that thinking Thatcher a bad lady equates to thinking that the 70s were Utopian takes a particularly witless thought process..
