Item B is £329.00. He takes it back and they charge him an admin fee of £25.00 because he opened the box.
He decides he wants item C at £279.00, so they refund him £25.00 - which is the difference they now owe.
£279.00 (item) + £25.00 (refund) + £25.00 (admin fee) = £329.00.
They keep the £25.00 admin fee and he's therefore paid £304.00 for the item.

£279.00 (item) + £25.00 (refund)

Why are you adding the refund?

so it comes down to whether or not he's happy to still be paying the £25 penalty, doesn't it ?

Me, I'd be taking my cash back, less £25 (ie £304) if they insisted on taking an admin fee. If I was keeping my business with them I'd expect them to waive it

no I'm not happy btw

yes why ?

329item - 25(handling charge) = 304 - 279(new item) = 25 (which is back in my account )

£329.00 (item B) minus £25.00 (admin fee) = £304.00.
Item C is £279.00 + £25.00 admin fee that they've kept) = £304.00.
The £25.00 (refund) is the difference between £304.00 and £329.00 (item B).

£25.00 admin fee that they've kept

They refunded. That's why they call it a refund.

Drac, they've kept the admin charge

The difference between what he paid in for Item B (329) and Item C's price (279) is 50 quid

They gave him £25 back. He is £25 out of pocket (which equates to the penalty charge, but it still means he's out of pocket)

this is true they did

Wait what? Did they refund you £25 after item C or not?

He has paid £329.00
He has an item that cost £279.00
The shop have taken an admin fee of £25.00
£329.00 minus the admin fee leaves £304.00
£304.00 minus the £25.00 refund = £279.00
He has therefore paid £279.00 + an admin fee of £25.00 which = £304.00
The £25.00 refund is the difference between this £304.00 and the original £329.00.

Keep it simple ... 🙄

(Must not be defeated by simple calculation)

A = Bought A £289
A = Return A
A = Refunded A
Total cost £0
-----------------------------
B = Bought B £329
B = Return B
B = Refunded B
B = Incurred £25 handling charge
Total cost £25
-----------------------------
C = Bought C £279
C = C now cost £279 + handling charge £25 = £304
C = Refunded £25
Total cost £304 MINUS £25 (refund) = £279

Therefore, Price of C = £279.

😡

I don't think they refunded B like Chewkw is suggesting.
Looks like £25 down to me (the admin charge)

No no no!!

He buys Item B for £329.00.
He returns Item B, but he's opened it, so they charge him a £25.00 admin fee. He is now entitled to a £304.00 refund. £329.00 minus £25.00
He now buys Item C for £279.00. They refund him the £25.00 difference between Item C (£279.00) and the £304.00 refund he was entitled to after they took the £25.00 admin charge from his original £329.00.

Tee hee

seems to me you've paid 279 for a thing (item C), plus 25 quid for the pleasure of opening a box.

Whether the former is a fair price, only you can judge. I'd be a bit annoyed at the latter.

£329.00 (Item B)
£25.00 (Admin fee)
£25.00 (Refund)
£279.00 (Item C)

£329 (Item B) minus £25.00 (Admin fee) = £304.00 minus £25.00 (Refund) = £279.00 (Item C)

The admin fee was NOT refunded. He has paid that along with his £279.00 for Item C

But I thought you got a 25 pound discount/refund on the final item you bought? So that would balance everything out.

In any case, 25 pounds might be worth it if there was lots of that plastic sheeting to peel off the screen. And if you popped all the bubble wrap. I love unpacking boxes. #childish

£329 + £25 - £25 = £329 - £279 = £50 Down.

Bought item A for £289, it stopped working back to shop and upgraded to item B that cost £329 so paid extra £40 item B was crap so back to shop, shop want £25 handling fee as item B was opened, so eventually buy item C for £279 and got a £25 refund !

Over all am I out of pocket ?

thanks

ooo this is fun

£329 + £25 - £25 = £329 - £279 = £50 Down.

By that logic.

£329 - £329 + £25 return fee = £304

£279 - £25 refund = £254

£304 - £254 = £50

Damn he's £50 up.

If they refunded him the £304 after 'B' (on Chewkw workings) and then he made a seperate purchase of £254 (£279 with a £25 refund) for 'C' everything is square

If they used '£304' to deduct the final £279 and then give him the 25 quids back then that only squares the £304

Because he actually paid £329

^^^ This is the normal way most shops do their refund. i.e. they would re-scan the item again to put it back to stock, then scan the next one etc ...

If they used '£304' to deduct the final £279 and then give him the 25 quids back then that only squares the £304.
Because he actually paid £329

^^^ This is for cowboys. If they start doing calculation in front of you ...

£279 - £329 = -£50 Shirley . I've had beers so that's my excuse.
The £25 charge is cancelled out by the £25 refund.

Just for Chewkw

He pays £329.00 for Item B.

He takes it back and asks for a full refund. They say no, because he's opened the box, and charge him £25.00.

They refund him £304.00 (£329.00 (Item B) minus £25.00 (Admin fee))

He has now paid the shop £25.00 and has bought nothing.

He then buys Item C for £279.00.

Therefore, he has paid the shop a total of £304.00 for a telly with a price tag of £279.00. (£279.00 (Item C) + £25.00 (Admin fee))

He is out of pocket. And a bit miffed about it too.
