Being dragged round shopping the other day and ended up in Allsaints and playing with the sewing machines. Always thought they were fake/shop fittings but they're real - where did Allsaints find so many of them?

My mum did, it's probably still out in the shed, somewhere; a Singer one, with a domed wooden cover.

IIRC they used to pick up second hand originals here and there but now source from china (replicas)

I was wondering the same thing on Friday - there must be a few hundred of them in the window of the gloucester quays shop.

Fair play, it looks pretty cool. But will date quickly and then what will they do with them?

My mum has the same and still uses hers.

googled it last night-the only info I could really find was that they have 10,000 of them in a warehouse in Kent.

The ones in Selfridges Manchester looked pretty original with various parts broken, missing or worn.

My ex used to be a buyer for All Saints. Apparently they're imported from India. They've got something crazy like 40-50k of them across all their stores globally.

Rescued a Jones one from a customers garden ,Lovely looking and great detail to the paint/transfers on it.
Sadly if was too rusted up and seized internally to use , made a great door stop though.

You still see them in use in Africa, I suspect there are 1000s out there working away....

There must be hundreds of millions of them out there still - they were built to last.

The old hand-cranked ones are still made in India and elsewhere - http://www.singerindia.net/straight_Stich.aspx?id=1

I can thoroughly recommend a Singer hand cranked. I mend all sorts with mine. Great for bunging new zips in neoprene overboots etc.
