I am wondering if anyone else has had any similar experiences! I have always had a problem with allergies, I was diagnosed in early 90's as having perennial rhinitis, which is basically a sensitive nose lining which makes me even more sensitive to things like dust, pollen. It's been really annoying over the years as I had horrific sneezing fits and it is like permanantly having a cold! Tried nasal sprays etc to no effect and would take anti-histamines when really really bad. recently decided to give up dairy products for a month to see if this would help, which is has and has made a huge difference. So now I'm trying to avoid dairy as much as possible (ie at home, soy milk, very small amounts of cheese etc).

However at the same time I have started having this lip swelling thing! I used to very occasionally get cold sores when I am tired and run down but one night I woke up in the morning with really swollen lips as if I'd had BAD plastic surgery, after about 2 hours the swelling goes down but it's really uncomfortable as it breaks all the skin up causing it to crack. This has now been going on for nearly 3 weeks! Dr's have tried anti-histamines and am currently on a short 5 day course of steroids but that doens't seemed to have had any effect. The Dr's basically have no clue as it ONLY ever happens over night! I am now waiting a referal to an immunologist however it's beginng to just annoy me as it's very uncomfortable, painful and obviously being right on your face isn't pleasant! Dr tells me it's "angio-odema" which isn't that just latin for swelling around the face!??? So no further forward to figuring out what the heck is causing it. This does not cause any other swelling (ie to tongue) or any problems with my breathing. Just very focused on both lips.

I just wondered if anyone had any other ideas or suggestions? I was thinking about that combined with allergies whether seeing a dietician will be of any use, or am I just wasting my money?

All suggestions useful as after 3 weeks I have no clue! I haven't tried any new products, I never wear make up so all the usual things that would cause an allergic reaction have been ruled out.

Cheers!

I know you say you haven't tried any new products, but do you use flouride toothpaste?
I had a horrible breakout of dermatitis around my mouth and the doc suggested flouride toothpaste might be aggravating if not causing it. I said I was using the same toothpaste I always used and he suggested sometimes 'it just happens'. Maybe you have become temporarily sensitive to something like that?
Just an idea - probably talking crap...

TN to be honest anything is worth a go to try and figure out what it is. When you look on line it says it can be anything really! include teeth problems! Guess next port of call is call/visit to dentist! I've never had a problem with my teeth yet (tip top condition) but I guess things can change super quickly!

Melon makes my lips swell up...takes about 2 minutes and the lip stays swollen for about 1 hour...goes very hard...a looks like I've been in a fight or something...always done it but as I like the taste of melon I live with it - no help for you though, sorry.

any issues with hives? or is it just lips / face swelling?

I used to have some trouble with that years ago but Claritin ( not the over the counter but Rx. ) took care of it.

if you get to the immune doc ask him to do a blood test for Iga

It is simply lips swelling, not even anything else on my face. I look like Lesley Ash in the mornings. It's ALWAYS over night as well, go to bed fine get up, bang big fat lips! About 2 hours later they have gone back to normal but cracked sore and general unpleasantness.

What is LGA? Dr also said she is reluctant to prescribe me anything to help the cracked sore lips as she doesn't know what's affecting it and just said to carry on putting vaseline on to help it!

who knows how long the referral to the immunologist will take to come through!? Dr was supposed to phone me on Friday about it and didn't! went into surgery this am to query it and they've left her a message so again waiting a phone call.
