Generally I'm with Binners on this. Chill dudes! ๐Ÿ™‚

That said I think the swearing rules are too vague. I try and avoid even mild stuff, as I have the vocabulary to do so ๐Ÿ˜‰ but there is a big grey area on here between The Queens English and Best Anglo-Saxon expletives that really does need clearing up.

Are we allowed to ****** words out ourselves? Yes or no? ๐Ÿ™‚
What words are allowed? If theyre allowed, then it's OK to print a list! ๐Ÿ™‚

I have had some clarification from Mark by email over one instance, which is great, but it would be a lot easier for him and everyone else if there was a short explanation of allowable contexts and a couple of examples ๐Ÿ™‚

I'm assuming 'smeg' (see Red Dwarf) is allowable though.

If not, oh smeg.....! :(. ๐Ÿ˜‰

We aren't going to publish a list of permitted words because as soon as we do someone will find a word that is not on the list that should be on the list and it will all end in silly 'But that's not on the list and he said it last week....' type arguments. I've explained the words that can't be used under any circumstances and they are the same ones that can't be used by any publishing organisation. You don't find a list of the acceptable words on the BBC websites or any other such organisation.

The golden rule is if you abuse another person with whatever language then you will be in trouble with the mods. But again, I'm repeating myself yet again now. Consider that what you say is being broadcast to everyone, even if you address it to someone in particular. If you'd think twice about standing up in a pub and shouting it out for everyone to hear for fear of being asked to leave then it's not ok to say it on here.

That's as clear as it's going to get. If that's not clear enough then consider that it seems clear enough to the vast majority of users and ask yourself why you don't get it.

The importance of this forum on the Internet should not be [s]under[/s] overestimated

there. sorted.
It's a forum. It's on the Internet. It's an Internet forum.
sometimes funny, soemtimes revealing, but, at the end of the day, just a chat room. Some people think it's so much more, but those people may need to get out a bit more and stop thinking that this is real life.

That's fair enough. Depends on the pub though, don't it? Personally I prefer nice chilled out friendly pubs, rather than the ones where you'll get glassed for looking at someone's pint. conversely, I'll avoid those ones where it's all families with kids, who tut and moan because you're having a ciggie OUTSIDE within a mile of their precious little darlings.

I know it's a difficult balance to strike, but there are times when STW seems a bit like that, I have to say.

It's better than that place down the road though; you know, the one what sells crap beer and is full of scummy drunks...

Mark. Does that mean I can definitely not accuse Hora of being an utter and complete *!

Or accuse him of *ing a * on a regular basis?

or make reference to his predilection for *ing, particularly when it concerns ****s?

Well actually, many of us do get out a bit and meet up in 'real life'. Which is kind of one of the purposes of this forum, isn't it?

See now, that's something I wouldn't have said. Sounds like an insult directed at me does that. Sounds like you're calling me fick or summfink. I'll have you know I've got GCSEs and stuff!

๐Ÿ˜‰

EDIT
I was asking on behalf of others to be fair, like I said I've got enough vicab.....vocurb....vlocurb..... BLAST IT! WORDS to not need a list....

Fred - I've started locking my bike to his outside the pub and making him buy me a pint before I'll unlock it.

Such a simple plan, but then he's not difficult to outwit ๐Ÿ˜‰

Whoa there!

Like it or not, there are rules in this world and I do think we also need rules on here. I really don't want to see a free-for-all where anything goes, resulting in girlies running away screaming. ๐Ÿ™„

People are over-reacting and need to put this in perspective. We all have our good days and bad days. Sometimes we share, sometimes we don't.

There are some terrific people on here and long may it continue.

Peace. 8)

Sorry to see you go BM, a lot of morons and brain farters on this website. Not really good to loose any of the likeable characters ๐Ÿ˜€

That said there are an awful lot of nasty pieces of work lurking on this site and that means a lot of people simply will not post because they will come under fire from the half wits.

I think some moderation is a good thing, we'll just have to see how it goes.

You know what actually, Merry Xmas and a Happy Newyear to everyone!

Hear hear Binners - couldn't have put it better myself.

This forum is great, apart from when an over-enthusiastic few start making it all self-referential and masturbatory (that's not swear filter avoidance is it? I would have used the W word in "real life").

Shame if you do leave Mitch, I've enjoyed reading some of your posts - which are usually funny or clever rather than flouncy.

Anyway, it's not the few attention seekers that make this forum so good, it's the collective humour, knowledge and not-very-seriousness.

Just been to have a look at the 'alternative universe' and the language is disgusting. Seriously wouldn't want this forum to be like that.

Not joking or trying to butter up the mods.

It's a forum, not a lifestyle. Get a grip and stop being such a prima donna.

+1.

I watched another forum fall to bits when a number of posters decided that they were bigger than the place they posted in, and set up a 'mod trap' which resulted in the forum being closed forever.

I've been banned for swearing at someone, and although it annoyed me at the time, it was perfectly justified and I have moderated my behaviour as a result.

If you don't like it, you don't have to come.

Sage words CG

People come and people go, it's the nature of the beast. Sometimes it is funny and brilliant and then it's dull and predictable, just like the posters, some of whom dominate the site by sheer volume of postings - bad in my view.

To BM - cheer up m8, I know that things don't appear great work wise but it's only a website and it's nearly Christmas.

To everyone else, including those [s]damned[/s] banned, have a good and merry one and remember the nights get lighter from now on. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think binners needs to remember the weeks when all he has to occupy himself is the forum and his genitalia.

Yesterday it seemed we'd never get over yeti's disappearance. Today, it seems that little bit easier. Time, my friends, is a great healer.

I don't 'need' ciggies; I just like one now and then, or if I'm having a pint or something.

TSY is amusing himself on Mleh atm. ๐Ÿ˜€

I genuinely feel that people are overreacting - all it takes is one person to rubbish then others follow suit.

Have had a look at that other place and I know where I would rather be - it's cosy here, accepting of people, folk reach out when someone is struggling, much humour, much kindness.

Certainly don't want to have expletives hurled willy nilly, playground behaviour, bullying. No thanks.

Come back barnsleymitch - you make us laugh!

FFS. Get a grip! Its an internet forum

There's so much navel gazing going on on here of late, its starting to resemble a sixth formers bedroom. It probably smells like one too

Fundamentally true.

However I do believe that the clampdown has had undesirable effects. To me the casual homophobia and misogyny needed to be clamped down on. However the swearing ban and banning of regulars for minor offences goes way too far for me. I am very surprised I have not had one quite honestly. I really have no idea what is acceptable and that pisses me off. Language I would use infront of my 75 yr old mother gets some folk a ban. Some consistency in the bannings would be nice as well. Some of the most offensive posters do not get banned, others get banned for minor infractions. If elf had said some of the things I have said he would be banned for sure.

A forum is only as good / useful / interesting as the posts that are made and while this is a big forum with a lot of posters its not a huge number that give it its flavour and spice. Lose too many and the character will change.

The preponderance of navel gazing threads show the disquiet and while I don't think anyone can hold a gun to the heads at STW towers they would be stupid not to heed this. This forum is a powerful and important part of their setup even if it does not create a great deal of money directly. It could go ratshit easily There is a pretty negative vibe about the place at the moment.

Mitch - I have been guilty in the past of giving the forum too much importance. Its not worth the dramaqueen act - I know I have been there. You need to put it in perspective. So have a break, regain some perspective and return when ready.

I find the line between good humour/legitimate criticism of religion and language bordering on hatred towards religious adherents is often crossed.

Interesting. I would tend not to agree but I have little time for any religion. I do remember a couple of people getting a hard time for being believers

Elfinsafety, i'm a bloke with little time for whingers. If he doesn't like it here then he can stop coming here. It's not compulsory is it?

I mean come on, its an Internet forum. If he doesn't like the rules here then he can set up and administer his own forum. But don't expect me to come over all emotional because he wants to make a stink.

I find it weird that people get banned for swearing in posts.

Walk into any pub in any place and you will hear expletives.

Seriously if you don't want to hear ( see ) swear words go to a kids forum. I fully understand the reasons for banning people that fire off personal insults but surely this place is becoming too PC.

I think this is fine. We should follow STW in this respect. Readers need to have consistency between the mag and the forum. The tone of both should be the same. This seems entirely sensible and simple. No need for a list of banned words, all the approved words can be found in the Mag.

So just follow the rules!

I'm often mildly offended by the aggressive and insulting attacks of particular atheists on this forum. So what!?

That sort of behaviour does their reputation no favours. They should not be banned just because I don't like how they express their ideas. Religious-minded people, I include myself, must be grown-up enough to tolerate the odd bit of mouthing off.

I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it
