Tim pot local radio this morning encourages us to stand up and join in with a pledge of Allegiance to King and Country.
Who comes up with this nonsense?
Why is it even newsworthy?
I care about as much for Charlie as he does for me.
Outdated, expensive, environmental disaster flying in dignitaries from the colonies. Bill of millions to wang a crown on an old fud who is already near his sell by date.
Already one of the richest Englishmem and were giving him and his inbred extended family tens of millions a year to ensure that the rich get richer.
Stand up and join in a pledge, not a chance. Stand up and demand a significant reduction in the civil list so we're not rewarding a load of historical bullies and murderers who got to where they are by killing and manipulating people.
Be nice to stop all this hero worship, they're just normal people who were born into royalty and raised as being aloof and above the rest of the population.
Bowing and curtseying i mean really.
Not a fan, keep em as the income for the country is significant, but lets remove them from the pedestal and stop being so overly virtuous.
Royal weddings, funerals and now coronation means just one thing, an extra day off and an opportunity to enjoy a nice long bike ride! Nothing more.
I'm not pledging allegiance to anyone or anything.
Do we really need yet another thread whining about the royals though? It's been done to death multiple times over.

Truth 👍

Considering the disruption ahead in the next week or so, and the cost & impact, then why not?
Happy to swear, but not allegiance.
Away with Mrs Pondo's family to "celebrate" the coronation. A nice day to get out on the bike.

I think so, yes. So long as the royal family exist in their current form, people should continue to voice their objection.
Used to like a bit of King.
Here we go again 🙄
Can't see anyone changing there mind about royalty, pro or against. I'll voice my opinions after the day.
” I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. “
Swearing allegiance to individuals that are at prep school, or might not even have been born yet. Totally normal country.
I’m not pledging allegiance to anyone or anything.
I am taking a stand here. Sorry.
I'm pledging allegiance to Mrs Fazzini, and, her acceptance of my love of bicycles 😉
(Edit: I may have accidentally omitted the word 'buying' from that sentence 🤷🏼♂️)
a) **** that.
b) Sandboy +1

Is there an ongoing coronation thread currently - might have missed it.
I do think the coronation is worthy of discussion beyond the 'what am I going to do with my extra bank holiday that is not even on the day the old boy gets a few million quids worth of precious metal and stone plonked on his head' inevitables.
My sense is that the antipathy of the nation is pretty palpable. Asking 'us' to actually pledge allegiance, making the act of going for a ride/garden/DIY instead almost an act of defiance, is poking the hornets nest. The sizeable proportion of the population not bothering and getting on with life will give the royalist DM readers something to get frothed up about, which is nice.
Like a Trump presidential inauguration crowd size, I suspect there will be statistical spinning after the event - does the BBC viewing figures and the Vox Pops of the deranged that have camped out for 4 nights to get a glimpse tell the true story, or is it the size of the queues at B&Q or the cars parked in trail centres? I suspect both - divided nation and all that.
Personally I'll be coordinating 7 DofE Gold exped groups in the hills - planned before queenie died and not rearranged. I'm of two minds if that constitutes a thumbing of nose or the ultimate act of royalist honouring.

It's a forum. That's what forums do. If we were only allowed to discuss stuff that hadn't bin dun before then the forum would have folded years ago.
Amazingly enough, if you don't bother watching it then you'll miss the bit where you can swear allegiance. Job done.
Used to like a bit of King.
Ooh, remember that time when King, Queen, Prince and Princess we're all in the charts at the same time!! Good times those.
The Archbishop of Canterbury will then proclaim "God save the King", with all asked to respond: "God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the King live forever."
Well that's not batshit mental medieval cult stuff is it?
The sooner we are rid the better.
Not my king.
I thought I knew my music….who were Princess?
Now is really not the time to be having these discussions.
Whatever your views, anyone with an atom of decency will reserve their thoughts until after the coronation.
It's only seven months since the death of HRH and the focus needs to be on supporting King Charles and celebrating this magnificent occasion.
Save the discussions for later.

Respectfully disagree at every conceivable level. In fact, I can't think of a more incorrect statement.
At the time of her death, you might have noticed most republicans kept a respectful silence. But this is not then. This is about the future. This is the moment to object.
I’ll support them when they support me

I genuinely don’t know when the coronation is,
Me too.. I thought it was next week or is that just the BH?
With the internet now it really is entirely possible to live in a bubble.
This is why the emergency test signal is so useful they should announced it on that 😜
I swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles, his heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God.
Every MP makes that ^^ oath, including SNP MPs. But not Sinn Fein, which is why there are no SF MPs.

I'm assuming this has to be sarcasm.
I had respect for the old queen, but there is always time for these discussions.
Charlie can f off will his billions and the right to change laws that we all have to follow to his benefit.
Screw him and the coronation
I thought I knew my music….who were Princess?
Was, not were. Some young pop starlet one-hit-wonder. Looked a bit like Nena Cherry IIRC.
I’m assuming this has to be sarcasm.
Ah, maybe it was and my ironymeter needs a tap. Apologies if it was. Rereading again it was pretty obvious it was not meant to be taken seriously.
They'd be a whimsical tut from my fellow countrymen if I sweared an oath to an English king.

🤣
That’s brilliant! Well done. Nearly choked on my breakfast reading that.
Historically I was with the monarchy. Well, I tolerated their existence in the name of tradition and national identity, and because the queen seemed a good egg and was a good statesman/ambassador. But now she’s gone: off with their heads!
They’re taking the piss now frankly. Camilla slyly made queen “consort”, pledge your allegiance to the new king… get to ****! Everything else that was good about this country is being banned, underfunded, cancelled or sold off and yet we’re supposed to carry on supporting this parasitical anachronism? Bollocks. You’ve got a month to vacate your palaces so they can be developed into affordable housing.
Still, nice to have an extra bank holiday.
TL;DR ... As much as I appreciate the day off how much is this shite going to cost the economy? £3Bn? We're all in it together blah blah blah......but this sycophancy is going to make us poorer as a nation plus we're chuffing paying for the event even though he's worth nearly £1Bn.
May Baby Jesus bestow upon them the gift of dysentry, chlamydia or distemper
Indeed - I am totally befuddled why an event happening on a Saturday morning needs another public bank holiday on Monday. To do what with exactly?*
*There might be a touch of envy in this answer as I'll be working 2 out of 3 May bank holidays for no extra pay cos it's in my contract to do so.

Really?

All that's new this time is that the general public are "invited" to do so if they wish. I'll be out or washing my hair.
Given the history of King Charles in this country keeping their heads is only 50/50 so far, I can see why he'd be keen on a pledge of loyalty from the rest of us.
This did make me think. Would I be prepared to swear an oath of allegiance in some form to recognise that I am part of society, and the quid pro quo that entails? I guess I would in principle.
Everything else that was good about this country is being banned
Sorry, I must have missed something here. What was good about this country that's been banned, what are you referring to?
very MP makes that ^^ oath, including SNP MPs. But not Sinn Fein, which is why there are no SF MPs.
Errmmm - in the scottish parliament they take a differnt oath and can affirm instead
Members will enter the Chamber individually from the north and south entrances. After being called by the Presiding Officer, they will proceed to the well of the Chamber where they will be asked whether they wish to take the oath or the affirmation. The choice is a personal one and the effect of both is the same.
The oath states: “I (Member’s Name), do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Her Heirs and Successors, according to Law. So help me God.”
The affirmation states: “I (Member’s Name), do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Her Heirs and Successors, according to Law.”
Same for armed forces.
I, (<i>Insert full name</i>), do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles, his heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God.
You can affirm also.
Would I be prepared to swear an oath of allegiance in some form to recognise that I am part of society,
That's an interesting take, which completely differs from mine. I guess it might depend on the prejudice you read it from. I very much read it as an allegiance to a hereditary head of state and their descendants, not to the 'society' over which they are imposed. I guess you can consider yourself to be part of a society of serfs if that's your bag.
They could have scrapped it completely and 'we', including him, could have taken part in a mass affirmation to the nation (or society) in all our different roles.
Sorry, I must have missed something here. What was good about this country that’s been banned, what are you referring to?
Off the top of my head - smoking in bars. Not that smoke myself. But now look what’s happened. A general atmosphere of sickly perfume and farts. Noisy little kids running around and insufferable people taking ages at the bar ordering food.
It's all bloody silly really. If you don't have the literal fear of god hanging over you then you might as well pinky promise.
I'm up for swearing and nuking

No it isn’t. SF Abstention is is not over a refusal to swear allegiance to the monarch, that’s just a lazy way to ignore the real reasons, that of opposition to the British parliament legislating over Ireland. Not swearing is a consequence not the reason, if there was no oath of allegiance, under current SF policy, they would still absent themselves.
