I'm looking to build up a wheelset for (mostly) singlespeed 29er use (scandal or swift if I can ever make up my mind!) and usually ride on Hexham common, Cheviots and North Yorks (so generally flowing but rocky trails). I probably would be using a 2.1-2.25 on the rear and a 2.25-2.4 on the front and running tubeless. I'll be using a rigid fork and weigh ~14st/90kg.

What would peoples experiences dictate regarding my weight and tyre width with Flow/Arch rim choice?

I'm currently erring towards an arch on the rear and a flow on the front but is this compromise for the sake of it or would the tyre shape be better?

I regularily ride that area. To be honest I have used everything from Mavic 717's to Stan's Flows and they were all fine. I'm 95kgs by the way.

They are all 26" wheels using everything from 140mm full sus to a 120mm hardtail. I have just bought a 29" Niner One9 that I'm nearly finished. It will have 100mm of travel and I went for DT470 wheels which are similar to the 717's. I really wanted the Arch's but I got a good deal on them from Stiff and thought I'd give them a go.

If I was going rigid then I'd look to the Flows as they are strong, and wide for the large tyre you will be adding to the front. The weight difference is minimal.

I ride in Mid Wales (Nant, climach-x, Brechfa, CyB and natural) and use an Olympic on the back. I'm heavier than the both of you and have had no problems since Feb when the wheel was built.

The wheel is on my Superlight so can't really compare to a rigid, ss, 29er ๐Ÿ˜‰

I went with the Arch. It saves 100g of the weight of the Flow. I'm 15st and ride rough Welsh trails, scotlnad, Dalby etc, etc and never had an issue. Don't do any drops as such though but no problems with the type of riding i do.

P.S Get 'em built on some i9 hubs ๐Ÿ˜›

What about Flow on the front and Arch on the rear?

I asked abut a flow on the front and a 355 on the back, if you're interested: http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/355-on-the-front-flow-on-the-back

I run ARch's front and rear on my 29er and frankly can't see myself ever going bigger than a 2.2 on either front or rear (and I'm by far the heaviest to post yet!) I do however run the front with only about 25 psi in to get a bigger contact patch which seems to work rather well. The stans rims seem to be made of solid granite and shrug off being "rimmed out" (ooer) incredibly well - I have one small nick in the rear rim from completely destroying a tire ( a failed attempt to run a non tubeless tyre with just the yellow tape - tubeless) but thats it.

I don't do "drops" as such but tend to try and find as many "launch pads" as possible on the trail to satisfy my childish desires of flight.

Bike set up for what its worthe is a salsa dos Niner with Mav SC32 and eclectic garage build. Rider setup about 100Kgs and slightly wobbly !
