Ignoring the fact that putting deore/SLX on an expensive chainset seems daft & also bearing in mind that I've tried 1x10 and I'm now waiting for these 40t sprockets to become commonplace, can anybody explain why I can't set up my mech?
I bought the cranks 2nd hand, I removed the Rotor rings that came with it and fitted my deore middle and SLX inner. I can't get the inner ring set up, it either won't change down or it drops off the inside. Are the spacings different between XTR & SLX? Should I use some washers to move inner ring inwards?
XTR 970 by the way & it's also possible that I'm crap at it...
Yes, the spacing is different on the inner ring, I think.
^ correct. the inner ring is thicker on recent XTR so a few washers should bodge it.

You need a M8x2mm washers on the inner ring on M970, M980 is standard spacing.
Welcome to the XTR-scaff posse btw, deore rings on mine ๐
Cheers chaps, I'll put the washers on and try again. Good job I'm bald, I was close to pulling my hair out!
Northwind, I'm a cheapskate at heart & deore rings seem hard to beat, along with Superstar grips & tubeless valves out of old tubes..
I made the opposite mistake and put the rings from the XTR cranks I run singlespeed on an XT crankset.
Took me ages to work out why the chain kept dropping between the middle and inner rings...
Is it? Useful to know if so. I took the triple rings off my 98-triple and the inner is thicker than normal, but I haven't checked if the actual tooth offset was the same as XT or older XTR.M980 is standard spacing
Can I add a question regarding spacing to this thread please?
I'm using xtr 970 cranks with a works components n/w 32t ring (in the middle ring position) and 11-36 on the rear. Using the bigger cogs on the rear the chainline is awful so much so that you can physically see and hear the chain pinging off the wider profile teeth of the front ring.
Does the front ring need spacing out? Or should I run the bb without any spacers on the drive side tp make the chainline better?
Hm, I'm using that exact setup on my ragley and the chainline is fine.
