Are they compatible with the older XTR or Saint pads? They look very similar.

YES mate, they're the same pad...
Only the cheaper Deore's use a different pad, everything LX/SLX upwards uses (or can use) the same pad. The newer XTR's use a slightly different pad in that they have a titanium back, but that's for heat transfer reasons (so they say) and the XT pads fit.

the old style XT/XTR pads do [b]NOT [/b]fit the new XTR brakes...

I think mboy is talking about M975 XTR as they are the same shape but ti backed. M985 brand new XTR is a new pad shape.
