Want to remove the gear indicators so I can mount the shifters outside the brake levers. Can you get blanks to cover the holes or do you have to resort to gaffer tape??
It depends which model of XT shifter you have. Current SL-M770 have the blanks hidden on the back of the indicator units. Older ones will need some tape.
Park self adhesive repair patches are your friend, make sure the shifter body is nice and clean and they stick like the proverbial to a blanket, been on my shifters for nearly 2 years now and because they are clear they are quite discreet.
my XT08 shifters came with blanks - I did the same as you're proposing. Far more space for my ape like hands

There are numbers listed on the shimano page but probably cost a fortune on their own.....
