If you're happy with the Q factor then one frame with multiple wheels seems like a good approach. I considered that when speccing out this frame but I'm OK having more than one bike.

I only had a quick shoot round but I didn't even notice the q factor tbh. I've got my stoater for other things anyway 😉

Well, I posted somewhere up there ^^^^ that I was not going to avoid popping in to Go Outdoors.

I did, and the inevitable happened...

First ride in the FoD last Sunday night was brilliant - much faster than I thought, and doesn't feel heavy at all. I've changed the brakes for some Maguras I had in the garage, and swapped the seatpost for a 125 reverb, so it fits me at 6 foot.

Tomorrow brings the Cafall in the rain - I'm expecting to find the limits of the Jumbo Jim's...

Oh I'm glad it worked in the FoD. That's where mine is going next week.

Fitted fine even with 350mm seat post. So rather than waiting for a large, I just bought it. £493! Spent more on a set of forks. Wider bars and SLX brakes going on from spares box. Not sure about transmission yet, assume you need to do something funky with such a wide BB shell?

If you ride in wet clay you will find the limits of the Jumbo Jims pretty fast 😆
After my mate picked up a puncture on Thursday nights monsoon ride I felt reasonably smug that the Dune had escaped in view of all the thorns locally I was very pleased....until Friday morning.....flat front tyre courtesy of an inch long blackthorn....anyway whilst the Dunes tyres are tubeless compatible I've taken the route of a bottle of Slime Tube Sealant in each inner tube instead.....the weight of the sealant ain't going to make any more difference than the mud that was stuck to me and the bike and it seems a lot of desert riders who are plagued by Goathead thorns use this method successfully.
As another aside/update on the Dune and durability.....buyers beware of the gear cable rub on the crown of the forks, it's wearing fast on mine (must get some protection on it) and I've already eaten one tooth off the big ring......guess it's because it seems to encourage riding up and over inappropriate obstacles still ie bigger fallen trees.
Anyway enjoy the grotty trails whilst your mates are off and pushing.

I got absolutely nowhere tubelessing the tyres/rims btw. Easy to seal the rim, not easy to mount, big gaps- I reckon it'll need some of the bodgy packing foam voodoo to make it go. Can't be arsed.

Alex - what are you doing with the transmission?

I want to change the stock M310 shifters on mine, so I can get rid of the stupid indicator windows, which will then enable me to swap the clamps and run the brakes on the inside. I can't find 8 speed shifters without the indicators, so might have to change to 9/10 speed, for which I think I may be in new wheel or hub territory.

Not sure if I CBA with that...

Faddy is the hub only able to run 8 speed cassette then?

I assumed they weren't compatible, but I've just been reading up, and a 10 speed may just slide on and, bizarrely, need a spacer. I have shifters, so I may just buy a cassette and see if it fits...

I'd have bought a charge cooker maxi today in Leisure Lakes for £700 if:

A) my missus wasn't with me
B) could get it on the bike rack. 18 miles home on Tarmac riding it wouldn't be my ideal first ride on a fat bike.

@fadda - I've consulted with the Dune Oracle that is NorthWind and he's using the existing cranks with a chain ring bolted to the where the big ring was so dumping all the front mech malarky. I assume he's running 1x10 out back too so it must fit. Voyage of discovery I suspect.

I'm going to try that - run SLX rear mech and shifter, 10 spd cassette (assuming it'll fit), existing cranks with a Narrow Wide Ring, and switch out the brakes. Have all those spares so nothing to lose. NW reckons the chain line isn't perfect but workable.

He also pointed me in the direction of the race face eaffect cranks which look excellent value if you wanted a 'proper' 1x10 setup. I have a spare direct mount 32T RF ring so if I can't get on with the stock cranks I'll go with that option I think. Only paid £493 for me, so one extra purchase is probably okay!

Ha, I am the dune oracle, or dorc for short. give it a week, everyone else'll know as much as me, I'm just slightly ahead.

1x10 is no bother, 8-9-10 and shimano 11 speed all use compatible hubs. I don't think the chainline's quite right, don't care, it works fine. I went with a 30T because I had a 30T in the garage, but, it seems pretty ideal- the big tyres means it has a higher final drive, like a 29er.

DORC 🙂 I stuck a pic of mine of face-cloth. Amusing response. Quite divisive then. I wished I'd bought a single speed one or maybe an electric version like STW had. That'd had really made people annoyed 🙂

I think my 'spare' narrow wide is 34T. I'll just have to man up (or as is more likely fit an extender to the cassette)

Well, after not riding for nearly 3 years, a month now on Singletrack again, the bug has really struck anew.

Bought one of these Dunes yesterday... a couple of hours round Llandegla this afternoon and I'm still smiling 🙂 Haven't had as much fun for ages.

Haven't seen this mentioned - I assume the wheels/running gear is not as good, as it has (albeit basic) hydraulic brakes.......

Pretty much all the big brands have options, apart from Shimano who are sticking their fingers in their ears and shouting la-la-la. Only thing you can mess up is crank length, they come in 100 and 120mm BB's (roughly for 4" and 5" tyre clearance respectively). There's a slight degree of incompatibility with some frames/cranks but it mostly seems to have been ironed out.

Took the dune to the FoD and - for those that know it - rode all of the Verderers and the first climb/new descent on the Freeminers. Did a bit of off piste as well, mainly messing about on small to medium sized drops.

Running 10PSI in both tyres (no spare tubes yet), conditions were good on the man made trails, pretty muddy and slippy everywhere else. Bike was stock except for a seat collar QR.

Things I loved:
- Grip. I know I shouldn’t have been surprised but it’s phenomenal. Nowhere near the limits but on the last verderers descent, I was happy to chuck it into the berms at reasonable angles. While making BRRRAAAAP noises 🙂

- Nimbleness. I expected a monster truck that you point in one direction and can only go somewhere else by shouting ‘FULL RIGHT RUDDER’ and clanging a ships bell! But it’s amazingly precise, really can pick a line, lots of fun swinging in between apexes. Easier to get round hairpins than my 29er

- It is a monster truck tho. From 26 to 29 I noticed the ‘rollover’ you get with bigger wheels. The Dune is like that but on steroids. It’s amazing how much the tyres will soak up and you can pick stupid lines right up to the point when you realise it is 2inches of undamped travel. There’s no magic there!

- Climbs well. DIdn’t use the inner ring but nothing really steep on this ride. It’ll go 1x10 easily. I love the way you can basically stop, put the power down and motor off. Not in the deep mud but everywhere else it felt like you could climb up the side of a house if you had the legs.

- Gears and brakes (Although see below) work fine. Comedy gaps in the block but everything shifts properly even when muddy.

- Grin factor. New bike and all that, but god it made me smile. I wasn’t going to do the free-miners but wanted to play on some little drop off I know up there. The last run over wet roots was brilliant. Although I was lucky not to crash a couple of times.

Things I didn’t like so much
- How quickly you slow down! I barely used the brakes and I’m not brave. Although I didn’t like them much. When you get up to speed you need to keep it, encourages pumping etc but I didn’t get it right too often.

- Hard (for me) to get it airborne. That’s why I went looking for drops. It needs a proper weight shift to get the front end up. I’m used (post Jedi) to just standing up really on my FS bikes. You have to work harder here but that’s just technique. By the end I was happy lobbing it off a 2ft drop and it feels super stable in the (tiny) air. Landings are well cushioned 🙂

- The brakes. They work fine actually but those long leavers are nasty when you’re used to one finger braking. Happy to switch those out for SLX next weekend.

- No dropper. You do get used to one don’t you? I lowered the seat for the longer descents but I’ll definitely be on the lookout for a long 30.9 dropper. The std 350mm is not quite long enough for me, I need another half inch(!). But I’ll live with it as it’s definitely worth a dropper.

- Narrow bars. All my bikes has 780mm, these are maybe 710? Luckily I have spares.

- I had to come home. And go to spin class later. My legs are ruined!

I was knackered anyway as I’d ridden 60km yesterday in the slop and been to the gym this morning. But the Dune put such a grin on my face, I just kept going until running out of time and light. The verderers is about 11km and it normally takes me about 40-45 mins. I ride it lots with my teenage daughter - normally on my HT and once on my cross bike (which was horrible) and today I ripped round in about the same time including some faffing.

Not putting too much effort in at all, so while it’s not as quick up or down as my other bikes, it’s not far behind. And I don’t much care because you just go searching out stupid stuff that seems entirely inappropriate for a rigid bike.

Only 15km and less than 90 mins riding. But on that experience, going to get the upgrades on and get back out there!

Thanks for that TINAS. The RF cranks look good especially as I have a spare 32T direct mount ring. NW in his DORC guise told me there's something about offsets you need to be careful of. I do love a new standard 😉

Great write up Alex.

Look forward to hearing about the upgrades and how it rides.

I had a Surly Pugsley over the weekend and, on the back of that, ordered a Pug this morning while returning the loaner.

Ta. The transmission I'll probably run through the winter as it's better than expected. It is ugly as sin tho. And the cranks flex even under my puny thighs! Brakes, bars and grips tho need changing.

Once the TX is shot, then it'll be a used but serviceable 1x10 SLX drivetrain with a 32T ring and a set of new cranks. Cranks seem to be around £85 with a BB (but not direct mount ring) which seems pretty reasonable.

How are you building the Pug up?

The UKFB Forum has only one Admin who gets bombed with loads of Spam so has to sort through for the genuine fatty folks...
Great to see so much Fatbike interest here on STW 🙂
This forum totally ripped original Puglsey/Muckluk owners 6 years ago... until it snowed in December 2010... 😉
Since folks have seen what Fatbikes are like on natural terrain for xc riding...

The two Facebook pages- UK fatbikes and UK Fatbike Club have most of the same members as the UKFB Forum...

Also Forth Fat page on FB for the yearly coastal fatbike meet- sponsered by NB Gin 😀
