I have one of the older Alloy frames. I'm running Pike Dual Airs at 140mm with the wheelbase at the longest setting. Lovely.

I've got Maverick SC32's on all 3 of my Whyte 19's, I like the way they ride and they're easy to service and tune.

so no problem going bigger than the suggested 120mm? I've got the Maverick Duc32's on a Whyte 46 & find they can dive a lot if not at right pressure

I really like my stock 19 steel... but it's not without issues.

Stock 120mm REBA SL on mine and I find the bottom bracket a tad high and the seat angle a bit slack... I really think this frame would suit a 100mm fork... which kind of misses the point of it's billing as a longish forked hardtail. The Reba's are also a bit noodly when pushed... which might just be an effect of my riding style.

I'm perhaps being a bit harsh as it's an epic XC/trail bike but when I've pushed it into use for the bigger terrain I ride it feels completely out of its depth. Lovely for the forest but not for the mountains.

In short - I would not put a longer fork than 120mm on it and I would want a stiffer fork than the Reba.

Oh - and after experimenting I've settled on the long wheelbase as best.

Umm interesting comments messiah, the mag review billed it as a longish travel bike possible suiting a 140-120 adjustable fork.
ta for your thoughts fellas

I read a heap of reviews of the various 19's and 901/905 etc but not the steel... perhaps it's different?

Was basing my thoughts on the st mag review of titainium hardtails from aug last year.
They recommended 120mm for most stuff but a 140mm could be useful for more tecky steep stuff. I was thinking of a talas 140-110 fork or 150-120?

Yes, I have that mag and indeed it says that. It also says the bike is one for the consomethinge bike handler as it needs to be negotiated down stuff... I think that's the high bottom bracket working against the nice slack head angle... imho.
I loved it when I got it but over the months I've found a few things its not so good at... but I am pretty hard on bikes...

got fox 120 rl on mine. Would not want to go any longer, it would be massive overkill for the bike

I have old 130mm Revelations on mine and run the wheelbase 5mm longer - was a bit twitchy at speed with std wheelbase.

I run 80mm Skarebs on my 19C - they're light at around 3lbs and responsive but I am planning on investing in a 100mm SID or similar in the new year. I would suggest that you contact the tech guys at Whyte - they are helpful.
