[#686541]

After a bigish ride yesterday we (me and my GF) decided to take advantage of the sun and go for a short local blast.

It was all going great until i heard a scream and the sound of bone and metal hitting the dirt.

Sarah was nailing a nice bit of steep/rocky/loose singletrack hit a rock and went flying over her bars. Her head took the full impact of the fall right on an exposed sharp rock. She was doing atleast 20mph when she fell off.

All this a week after coming back unscathed from a week with ciclo montana in siera nevada!!

This is what her helmet looked like when she took it off:

Glad she's OK, cracked a few in my time, doesn't mean they are life savers...I'm happy to save some skin tho.

The trouble with local rides is familiarity breeds contempt! Most of my offs are within 5 miles of home!Hope the GF is ok.Keep a close eye for the next few days .

Agreed, she was in a bad way though when I got to her. I thought her arm was broken and she was covered in blood (people will think she has a violent partner!) I just dont want to think about the state she would have been in if she wasnt wearing a helmet.

There have been a few occasions today when I have thought about a trip to A&E as she's been feeling a bit drowsey with a headache. We will see how she is tomorrow

Ouch. I once cracked a big mofo piss-pot clean in two! didn't know who or where i was for a few hours!

I see the helmet is one of the cheaper giros.. not wanting to sound snobby but the pricer lids £50+ really do a better job IME. I work in a shop and always take glee in stamping on customer's old helmets when they get a new one to see how they stand up. Cheaper ones usually shatter into pieces first stomp, but the $$ lids really take a lot of force to break em, and often have a 'skeleton' holding them together, so stay largely as one instead of shattering into hundreds of pieces.

Contact madison as giro operate a half price crash replacement policy btw.

Hope she gets well soon. If she's a bit out of sorts it would be worth getting checked over IMO. I came off on last years' Dyfi and landed on my head. I'd have been in a bad way of wasn't for my lid and it wasn't as damaged as that one. I ended up at mt GP rather than A&E, concussion and neck injury for me. I never go on the bike without a lid nor do my family.

I don't go for the cheaper helmets thing, they all pass the same tests afterall. Isn't the extra cash for more vents, lighter weight etc?

- true, but when shopping for this helmet she was encouraged to try on all the helmets availabe. I wanted her to get some thing a little more upmarket as im clearly a 'bike snob' but the shop assistant shot me down and returned with a recent mag which had tested female specific helmets - the Giro Skyla did quite well and WMB ranked it second behind a £115 specialized.

Also after a big off I thought a helmet should be replaced, and if its clearly damaged then more reason to replace, rather than it looking like its still held together but the structural integrity has failed.

Thanks for the CRW tip though.

Yeah, i know i sound a bit of a nob with the 'spend dollar on a lid' comment but I work with and smash these things up all the time. In the past I have always told customers that the $$ only goes towards a lighter helmet with more vents etc. but believe me, some are tougher than others.. I thought the pricer ones would be weaker if anything (less foam?) but was rather surprised to learn the contrary! But this is just my experience, not gospel.

*Waves*

Waddya want me to say? Glad she ain't badly hurt

Nixon - its one of the paradoxes of helmet design - put more vents in and to get them to pass the testing you have to make the foam denser which makes them harder to break up but actually less good at absorbing the shock
