I do a little touring on an old Dawes galaxy which is great but the tyre width is its Achilles heel.

im thinking a surly cross check frame would be ideal.

anyone got one they want to part with 54top tube

I've got one but it's a 52cm and honestly, I think it might be my 'forever bike' so I'm not looking to sell it, I'm afraid.

Just one piece of advice if you're interested.  The only issue I've had with the 52cm is that once I put 42mm tyres on it with mudguards then toe overlap starts to become an issue.  Even just getting out of the saddle causes my foot to start colliding with the front wheel (I've probably broken three sets of mudguards over the years).

I assume the 54cm it will be less of an issue but I've seen people complaining about it with this size as well.  I've gotten used to it but if I need a new set of cranks at any point I'm going to try a much shorter set (175mm on there at the moment) so if I was you I'd consider the frame plus a new set of cranks.

Good choice, by the way.  In this world of wonderful new standards it's nice to be able to pull a bike out of a skip if you need new parts (which I have done a couple of times 🙂 )

Had a similar experience to @BruceWee with my 52cm Cross Check; serious toe overlap with mudguards! It was the first bike I ever bought brand-spanking new and they're very versatile - I did 'gravel' sportives, raced cross, and commuted on it, and it did all of the above with ablomb. Can highly recommend them, especially if you get some decent brakes like Shorty Ultimates or Paul Touring/Neo-Retro.

I ended up selling it as I got worried about the value of rim brake bikes tanking, and now have a Ritchey Outback which does all of the above, but I did really like the old Cross Check..

interesting, thanks guys!

(I'll defo be fitting guards)

I normally ride a 54 with a 100mm stem and a short/compact bar.

maybe I'll look larger frames and chuck a shorter stem on there.

I'm going to measure the Dawes up later, I'm also wondering about head tube height as I'd like a high position without stupid amounts of spacers (The Dawes is a quill stem so its pretty easy to raise and lower it)

anyone know much about the Long haul trucker 700? - I know this is a dedicated tourer so maybe its better with regards to toe overlap?
