As well as the Kielder 100 it looks like I might be entering some long trail races this year - so I thought I ought to start training! Anyone use the same garmin for both with any success?

I use a Forerunner 301 but if I was buying now I'd get the 405CX

I've got a Forerunner 305 as Amazon were doing them really cheap a couple of months ago (still pretty cheap now), when the 310XT came along. As I don't use the HRM bit, I could have got away with the 205 which is only £115 on there now - but I like to have the option.

I use it to monitor/track my runs and rides and have a log of them in the excellent SportTracks software. For runs, I'd tried stuff like the Nike+ system and could never get it calibrated right for distance so it was always off - this one is spot on as it knows exactly where it's been. I've been trying to moderate my run pace and build up slowly so having an accurate mins/km number is great.

On the bike, I use it like a regular bike computer except one that I can get a log of where I've been when I get home, and can use whichever bike without faffing with wheel sensors. I just use an old grip cut into 3 pieces and wrap the strap around the handlebar.

Not got round to trying it out for basic navigation but I might give that a go tomorrow.

That's just the sort of info I'm after - thanks.

+1 for the Forerunner 305. I've got the HR strap, bar mounts on three bikes and the road bike has a cadence and wheel speed sensor. I'm doing a duathlon next weekend and have just been reading up on setting up a multisport workout so it separately logs running time, transitions and cycling. Battery life is about 10 hours of solid use. I use Sporttracks on the PC and Garmin Connect to share workouts.
