You are not too far from the peak district there.

I suppose one might ask why not Cannock itself? Thing is there isnt much between the two. Manchester is surrounded by great riding in every direction other than South. M6 North from Cannock goes through the Cheshire plain. Not much great riding there. You could detour to Llandegla which is certainly worth a trip. Or as mentioned above you could head into the Peaks. Macclesfield Forest has some good riding but you need to know where to go and be cheeky agnostic. Farmer John's in Stockport is meant to be a good laugh as well. If roots n rocks is your thing then the Pennines is a good bet. Hebden has a myriad of steep rooty and rocky trails and there's always Lee Quarry if you want to overdose on the rocks..

Easy enough to extend Macc Forest up to Three Shires Head and Cumberland Clough way.

If you went A34 south for a bit then M4, M5, to get on the M6 you could do the Croft trail behind Nationwide in Swindon ๐Ÿ™‚

Roots? Swing through the shire on your way up. Hopton, Bringewood, Eastridge etc. Then up the a5 and m56

Another 75-90 mins north on the M6 and you're at Gisburn forest. Well worth a visit if you get the chance.
