[Closed] Wheelset weight saving - worth it or not?

[#3867628]

No doubt this has been asked a hundred times, but is it worth investing in a wheelset that shaves 400g off my existing wheelset. Will it be noticeable.

Existing wheels are the ones that came on the bike, Bontrager Rhythm Comps. I'm looking to go with the tried and tested Hope Pro 2 Evo's on Stans Crest Rims (26").

Thanks for your time.

400g?
Very noticable!
.
Worth it?
No idea. Only you can answer that. Usual points about strength/weight compromises apply.

yes, will be noticeable.

if it's worth it is really for you to decide ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, you will notice the difference.

An old argument...

Yes, losing weight is noticeable in that you can notice it, but it will not have any great effect on your actual performance.

I'll let the rotating weight folk come and tell you porkies now.

Thanks guys. And yeah Crikey, I've read and re-read the arguments about rotating weight and every time I do I end up believing the last thing I read!

I went from a cheapy merlin 29er set (2400g) minus tape and skewers to pro2 evos on crests 1690g ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

I still can't help picking that bike up every time I walk passed it and giggling like a little girl...

I can tell a set of Kings/Stans Aplines (1450g-ish) from a a set of Tune Prince/Princess on Alex XCR Pros (1200g) when riding, the climbing is very different. Won't take the Tunes out in the wet though, I've killed two freewheels so far...
Can imagine what a 2,400g wheelset feels like, the Minions on the big bike are a kilo each! That is not a fast bike (uphill anyway ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Yes - worth it. I've found upgrading to lighter tubeless wheels make my bike feel more playful and chuckable and improves acceleration.

Can't say I notice the weight on climbs. Don't think 400g really matters when me + my bike + water and gear weigh 90,000g!

Saying that, bunnying and general hooning about feels ace with lighter wheels. No science to back this up, but the difference in how it makes me feel is real for sure

Seems crystal clear to me..!!!!!!.

Newton's second law

The acceleration produced by a particular force acting on a body is directly proportional to the magnitude of the force and inversely proportional to the mass of the body.

We push harder and/or longer, and something moves faster. If it is heavier, we need to push longer or harder (or both) to obtain the same speed. It takes more energy to accelerate a heavier object to the same speed as we might move a lighter object to that same speed. We can either apply more force or apply the same force over a longer time to make something move faster. It is all about TIME times the POWER, or the amount of TIME an amount of POWER is applied.

Further weight savings can be had from going tubeless with crests also.

It's 400 grams. That's not going to quadruple because it's rotating.
Think about 400 grams added or taken away with reference to the god knows how many grams you and the rest of your bike and, if you pack a bag with enough stuff to survive a polar expedition every time you go out for a pedal, the rucksack on your back.
Notice it? I'd have thought so. Probably mostly if not only when you are accelerating and going up hill (micro accelerations slightly more pronounced going up hill than on the flat with each pedal stroke - no, you pedalling circles clipped in isn't applying absolute equal power)
Make any difference? Not in the great scale of things unless your ride is 2 minutes long and all up hill.

I've save 370 grams changing tires recently, and replacing a old saddle saved another 100 grams! allot cheaper IMHO, UST Nobby Nic 2.25 = 745 grams each. The new 2.25 Tubless Ready are 560 grams each. What I'm saying is there are other parts of the bike (including the rider) you can save weight ๐Ÿ™‚ at a lower cost!

"lance armstrong said 1lb equals an extra minute on a 10k hill"

Evidence if ever it was needed! His ability, 1 whole pound of weight, 60 seconds saved going up a 10 kilometre hill

Yes I'd think you'd notice it.

Most people do not consider the difference in stiffness better wheels can give, this is even more noticeable to me than the weight saving.

Defo, a massive difference. Oh and dont forget the tyres and get some decent light ones, try and go tubeless.
All this will change the bike totally for the better.

What Swedish Chef said. I'm pretty sure my bike benefitted more from a good stiff wheel build than my bolt through forks (comparing Hope/Flows and Hope/819 compared to flexy Bonty wheelsets).

400g is the equivalent of half a bag of sugar. Try attaching a quarer of a bag of sugar to each of your wheel rims and see how the bike rides then..... Big difference ๐Ÿ˜€

I did a similar thing not long back and it does make a difference and if nothing else the Hopes will last forever if you look after them ๐Ÿ™‚

Hang on.Losing 1lb will save 1minute over 10k.So av 30kph on a 16lb bike (mine) and it's 20 mins.So if I ride the worlds lightest road bike at 6lb I'll do it in 10 minutes (at an av of 60kph). Woohoo :0)
