[#742458]

Currently running ex721s on Hope Pro IIs that came off an old bike. I'm trying to whippet-ify things now I'm doing a lot more XC and the 721s are obviously overkill for trail centre riding

Moving over to xm719s with DT Revolution spokes is hovering around £130 for the pair which makes me think this wouldn't be the cheapest way of doing things

Am I likely to find second hand rims, or would I be better off buying a complete second hand wheelset then selling on the spare hubs?

there's only a 100g difference why bother?

going to a 719 aint much of a change tbh.
might as well get a proper light rim, or wait, save some money, and get a new (to you anyway) light weight wheelset.

What would be a lighter rim that isn't cheese? Surely it would be more than 100g saved with DT Rev spokes?

717 or stans? s/h wheels prob the cheapest. I'm not sure if revs/719's is a good combo, I'd go 717/comp or 719 on the back

I found my Olympics far tougher than 717s, what about 355s.

£70 seems a bit much for a rim, might just try a second hand 717 on the front for now

719's with Revolution spokes seems a bit of an odd combo. They look like soldering wire, I certainly wouldn't trust anything that thin!

I just got some 521's. Seem pretty bomb proof, 540g, £30 and wide profile for 2.25"+ tyres

"not sure if revs/719's is a good combo, I'd go 717/comp"
"717. Never ever bent one. "

No but big(/decent) sized tryes don't sit well on them. 2.35" High Rollers or 2.1" Kenda Nevegals are okay, but get upto a 2.25" Advantage or 2.5" High Roller/Minion and unless upto silly high pressures they roll about a bit.
Even if you can live with a little less stability, they'll make big tyres more circular giving less contact patch and harder to dig the edge/corning tread into the ground well

The revolution spokes are fine, if your regulary dropping off the side of a house maybe not, but for XC and Trail centre stuff I dont have any problem reccomending them as long as your not really heavy...

Mine are built onto 717 rims and have been faultless since 04, had a re tension after chairlifting in the Alps and broke 1 spoke at Thetford of all places. Am 12-13 stone depending on atmospheric pressure.

I'm 12 stone, just seems like there's as much weight to be saved on spokes as the rim

Only concern with the 717 is the tyre width as mentioned above, running 2.1 small block 8s atm which definitely run big. How about XR 4.2ds?

I've got 717's on Revolutions which will be plenty strong enough for trail centres if that's what you're into... As long as they're built right and kept tight.

And I run a 2.35" Bluegroove on the front which I like at 20 to 40 psi.
