Looking at some new wheels (old ones for sale in the classifieds BTW).
For roughly the same price I can get:
Chris King Hubs, DT XM481 rims
DT 240 hubs, Carbon rims
Otherwise identical builds. Same width, same spokes, same builder.
So, bling hubs or bling rims?
If DT, straight pull or J bend?
WWSTWD?
DT 240 Hubs.
Who makes the carbon rims? As someone who owns some Chris King on XM481s, I'd probably choose the 240s on carbon. I love my wheels and they've been spot on, but I've never had any issue with DT hubs either and they should be a fair bit lighter and parts aren't as mental as they are for anything Chris King.
DT for both, and the spokes as well while you're at it.
Knight Composites. Not quite ENVE bling, but certainly nicer hoops than the DT's. I do like King hubs, even though they are probably higher maintenance than DT.
Just get the DT hubs and rims. J spokes, always,
Just sold a bike with Knight rims on DT240s (straight pull). Didn't have a single issue in three years. Very light and and the Knight rims aren't super stiff unlike some carbon rims.
No vote for Kings on DT rims then.....
All seems to be a consensus on DT hubs and differing views on rims.
Thanks for the user review badddad.
DT Hubs and carbon rims would be my choice but I would want a crash replacement warranty on them
Does fast engagement matter to you? If so the King on the rear will be better than the DT.
I like a fast engagemnet rear hubs because I feel more connected to what the bike is doing.
Don't pay for a fancy front hub, its not worth it, there is no performance gain. Get the hubs in black and spec a hope on the front.
Actually, the DT XM1501 wheelset might be the better (lighter) option.
Compared to a DT-based custom build that is.
+1 for XM 1501 Spline 1's, lighter than most carbon offerings, super reliable and come with loads of extras in the box for the money.
They also use the same length spokes all round so you only need to carry one spare if you're riding in the back of beyond.
Chris Kings aren't very good, there're far better hubs out there for less cash, DT are a good example.
The new DT 240 is out soon though, and as standard, it has more points of engagement (36) than the current model (18).

I fancy a pair myself now.
36 points of engagement is dreadful. I think there's 44 points on a Hope pro4 and they feel agricultural alongside an i9 Hydra.
XM 481 on hope? cough I've put some on the classifieds 🙂
Having had CK on 481s, i ride a set of EX1501s and a set of 240s on carbon rims, either of those i would choose again, carbon rims are on the hardtail and i do feel a benefit, full sus it's 1501s every time.
The new version 240 is available now I think.
I've got a set of 240exp's on pre order from r2-bike. Should be in this month sometime. My plan is to build onto xm481 rims. I couldn't justify the price extra of carbon rims. Should still be a light build and super strong. I have the 481s on my HT, so I know they take a battering fine.
I’ve got CK hubs on my gravel bike (but with Stans Crest) and Roval Carbon rimmed wheels with DT internals on my XC bike.
If I had to choose it would be the DT, les staff maintaining the freehub/bearings and the various spacers/adapters for different cassettes or axles are cheaper too.
Thanks for all of the views. Went for DT240s (older design, Centre Lock, J Bend) built by Harry Rowland using CX Ray spokes onto Knight Composites rims.
I fitted the 54 tooth free hub and very happy I did.
Altogether very happy with the choice after a few rides under my belt. Spin forever, lively, light and supple. No regrets on the Chris Kings. On reflection they really are harder to maintain, more expensive to customise and not notably better (and I speak as the owner of a few sets)
Love 240s - like you say, they spin forever
