I'm considering getting a gravel bike in the near future, as I've only ever ridden MTB. Thought this might be a bit of a change and not too road orientated.
Have been looking at the Planet X Space Chicken (what a name!) but noticed they also do an On-One Free Ranger. so forgive my ignorance but whats the difference between the 2? They're both in house brands, selling the same thing at the same price point so whats the point in doubling up? or am I missing something?
Also waiting for the Calibre Dark Peak to be released, see what sort of machine that is...
Free Ranger has bigger tyre clearance I think.
Not sure there’s many other differences.
Free ranger is the updated version of the space chicken. Bit more tyre clearance (the SC is fairly tight with 47mm 650b tyres), 2x compatible, and some mild geo changes.
Also, bosses on the the top tube.
If they're the same price, get the free-ranger, it's a bit more versatile.
Nice one, thanks guys
Can I be the first to inform that you’ll be better off on a 29er/hardtail/parts-bin MTB/retro MTB/road-bike running 28mm tyres? (Delete as applicable)
It’s the rulez 😉

Thanks MR, knew it would happen at some point 😉
Seeing some of the pictures floating around, I kind of like the idea of a gravel bike but I don't really know why...
If you're coming from MTB I'd definitely go 650b, more cushion for the pushin' 😉
WTB byways are good for summer dry trails and potholed back lane antics, with something more knobblier for the winter mud.
