or alternatively, what do you run?

Always run a 2.4 Fat Albert, which I'm a fan of although they do get slagged off by many. But fancy trying something else.

2.4ish is fine, to go on a BFe with Lyriks.

Would UST Conti RQs be OK for alpine type riding?

I used Hutchinson Barracudas, they were fab. Would probably go with Toro Enduros next time as they're a bit faster rolling. Best all round tyre I've ever used. Wish they were cheaper cos I could do with another pair!

I used 2.4 UST RQ's last time, they were very good in the dry, wasn't totally convinced by them in the wet though.
Had previously used 2.4 Gooey Gluey Big Bettys. The extra volume of the RQ's was noticeable.

Depends where in the Alps you're going and whether you're planning to do any climbing.

Me, usually gravity based singletrack, 2.5 dual ply Highroller or Minion. You can run the standard versions tubeless pretty well.

what's EXO?

Does that mean it's tubeless? - I though LUST was Maxxis's tubeless casing...

Bonty FR4 Team Issue 2.35's are good burly tyres (especially if you like to lean on the shoulders), otherwise I'd go RQ 2.4

crikey, Maxxis's tyres have gone mad. Too many types!

It appears that any 2.5 width UST/LUST is a wire bead, and heavy. Is that true? The biggest LUST folder I've found is 2.35 (HR and Ignitor)

mmm RQ in 2.4 looks good, but it's expensive

PlanetX has 2.4 Fat Albert Evos (F) for £23!

I'm currently running a Fat Albert but not getting on with it, I'd had a HR dual ply on for 3 years - its a great Alps tyre and it's going back on this summer for my trip.

How the hell do you manage that? I usually kill a supertacky in a bit under a week and a maxxpro in about a week and a half!

Depends if you're doing much climbing, I have a pair of part worn UST 2.5" Super Tacky Minions languishing in the garage. Used them in Spain and found them great on the downs but hard work on long ups (we were doing 6-8 hour days with a lot of ups). If they float your boat PM me an offer. They're probably about 10% worn (90% left).

If you're doing lots of climbing forget the sticky stuff IMO.

@JonEdwards - the sad reality is I'm a lame rider (more rear brake drag than gnarly 🙁 ), I don't think my tyres are super tacky and local riding is mainly soft and loamy.

Using HRII 2.4 tubeless. Went up and great, grips well and not draggy at all. Run 2.3 HR Lust on back for winter combo. Ardent 2.25 for everything else.

EXO is a reinforced sidewall, seems to work really tubless and are a dcent weight for such a big tyre. I'm really pleased with mine. I've combined it with a 2.25 LUST Ardent on the rear meaning its a quick but relatively agressive set up

I've been running a Bonty XR Team Issue 2.4 tubeless at Afan and Glentress, good grip and seems strong for rocks.

I've run countless UST tyres in the Alps for years. Like others said it depends what you're doing as there will always be a compromise.

For uplifts then the old ST HR 2.4 and Minion rear is a solid combo. The Fat Albert 2.4's should be ok for both up and down, jack of all trades, master of none.

The worst tyre for me was the 2.4 (balloon) RQ's, very fragile sidewalls and my mate had his ripped open. Inspected mine at the end of the week and found I'd been living on borrowed time with them. Several tears that were down to one last thin layer.

Bonty's are good too.

Maxxis dual-ply Minion or High-Roller UST. Nothing else comes close!

okay so if EXO can be run okay tubeless then we have the following Maxxis options (nextdaytyres prices):

HR2 2.40 folding EXO £35
Ardent 2.4 folding EXO £40
Advantage 2.40 folding EXO £35
Minion 2.50 folding 60a EXO £39
Minion 2.50 folding 40a EXO £43
and
HR 2.35 folding LUST £39

is that enough choice?
