I'm readying my trusty On-One Scandal HT for some action this year. Mostly for my daughter to start riding with me.
It's been far too long since I built or maintained MTB's so I'm WAY out of touch with what's changed, regarding standards, Q factors and chan lines.
The crankset is a very old XT M785 triple but with a single NW ring to make it a wannabee 1x10 speed. I want to keep it 1x.
The BB is a 'normal/cheap/standard' Shimano HollowTech BSA jobby.
The current cranks are too long for me (I got them really cheap years back), let alone my daughter so I want to replace with a 165mm set.
Does anyone know where I can locate cheap, short cranks that will fit the old standard frames, chainlines etc?
It seems most current generation cranksets have far more measurements and standards I need to worry about, gone are the days where anything your got, would fit.
Any advice appreciated.
I'll PM you as have a set that would be ideal.
Yeah not to poach on Nixie but I just took a set of 165mm XTR M970s off a bike that'd be pretty much ideal- they look a wee bit odd with single ring because there's a space for a big ring but they work great.
Pretty well anything from Shimano's cheaper end should be OK. If you look you'll find cranks down to 160mm. I have 165mm XT crankset on my 15-yr old HT, with 28-tooth oval chainring.
The tiny chainring has to go on the inner ring position on the spider, but I've solved the problem of the pointy & worryingly sharp empty big ring positions at the ends of the spider arms by putting on a 30T-sized bash ring - looks neat & protects my ankles in those inevitable shouldn't-have-done-that moments.
Thanks for your help guys. I have some leads now.
