I cant seem to find any second hand and the ones I keep seeing on ebay look like they are selling for over the odds.

So what new road bike should I buy with £350 - £400?

I dont know much about road bikes but I think I need between a 58 - 60cm frame, that can be decided on a test ride.

I want it for general road riding around the lake district area.

Any help appreciated

Get thee to a decent bike shop! Best advice I can give, I'm afraid.

Have a look here: Bike Radar 0-500 quid road bikes

S/H is going to give you the best bargain, but a discounted Specialized Allez or Giant SCR might also be worth a look.

I usually buy stuff 2nd hand anyway so that was the first port of call, but i cant seem to find anything. Cant be arsed building one up myself either

Are Ribble any good? A mate of mine used to have one and it looked smart, I cant get the bike builder on their website to work though

Ribble bike builder works ok on IE here but not on Firefox - ymmv. My brother and my dad both have Ribble bikes and are very happy with them - they seem pretty good value for money too. Give the Fit Calculator on CompetitiveCyclist.com a try and see what kind of frame size it recommends as a starting point - though if you go to Ribble I think they'll size you up properly if you go in in person (not sure if they charge though)

For £300-£400 you would be better looking at second hand. However when I was looking for my first road bike last year I found it hard to find anything in my size (58-60com) so ended up buying a Genesis Vapour thinking that I could CX and tour on it.
A year later I've fully hooked on road riding and always turn to the road if the trails are messy. I'm now looking to buy a proper road bike as I don't CX or tour much.
For new I would look for discounted 2008 bikes if there are any left.

spech allez cos everyone recommends them, and I have one and seems spot on to me. Or the trek 1.2 I suppose, or Giant Defy 4, or the Guess RB1 if you want something different.

Second had is way over priced IMO and there must be some 09 bargins kicking about on the net by now surley.

If you could stretch I'd go for one of these, or the boardman comp.

If it was me, I would want steel though or at least a carbon rear end out of a £800 roadbike. Is that asking too much though? A Alu frame on the road would be tiring on a long ride? Thats a genuine open question for roadie's on here.

Saw THIS in the classifieds earlier. Reckon it'd be a good start point if you can stretch the budget a bit.

Look at Giant bikes (defy) - good quality and value IMHO

Tiring? Yes pure alu bikes are tiring but most now come with carbon forks and given the price range then I'm guessing that's where its at.

Good spot I'd buy that Genesis if I was you although it may be a bit small if you were looking a 58-60cm.
I'm selling my Genesis Vapour if you're interested. It's a 58cm large (I'm 6'3"). It's not a full road bike (CX / light tourer / commuter / audax) but I've taken it out on plenty of club runs in the last year and it didn't appear to slow me down (with road tyres which would be included).
