Afternoon All,

So, I need a set of disks for my decent wheels as it turns out trying to true an old set from the parts bin is a sure fire route to insanity.

Should I just buy a standard pair of Shimano disks or is there any performance advantage in a 'fancy' pair apart from maybe looking a bit better?

Thanks in advance

Dogsby

Shimano RT66 is the benchmark bang for buck at £15, everything else fancy is just marginal gains.

What brakes do you have? What riding are you doing? What (other than being bent) is wrong with your existing rotors?

The old ones really aren't worth recovering and I have tried!

Brakes are Shimano XT and the riding at the moment is mostly trail centre Cannock Chase type stuff so nothing too demanding.

No reason not to just slap on some Shimano rotors then.

This reminds me, last year I bought the cheapest no-name rotors I could find on ebay and put them on just before the annual Alps trip. I was fully prepared to admit they were junk and buy some expensive ones if I needed them but it never happened. They're still on and they're in better condition than the Hope's they replaced.

I think the 203mm was around a tenner and the 180mm was a bit less.

IIRC: Its worth remembering that Shimano rotors are 1.8mm thick brand new, Shimano advise to stop using them at 1.5mm. I accidentally ran a front down to 0.9mm and when i put a new one on it made a huge difference!!!
