my hardtail bike (not main bike)...is 13 inch frame and i currently have 80 travel rockshox recon race fork...... sometimes they bottom out even after i have put more air in,,,,, now duno if they mite need servicing (probably), but cos they are only 80 travel (ive sort of gone off the length of fork as im used to riding '140 travel' on my orange bike
lets say if i saved up for some longer travel forks wot is the 'maximum' length of travel i could have on a 13 inch frame.... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Totally depends on the frame and what it's been designed to take, but if it came with 80mm I wouldn't push it above 100mm...

ps :fully butted, smooth welded M4 alloy frame

yep just looked at the spec for the myka 2011 bike and it says : for 13/15 inch frame the forks are 80mm travel and for 16/17 inch frame the forks are 100mm travel. so i guess in answer to my question its a big fat No then....grrrrrr... as my frame is just 13 inch...

Anyway, my answer is still the same... Get them serviced and extended to 100mm at the same time. Frame size has nothing to do with the amount of travel you can run, it's how much the frame was designed to take that matters.

100 should be fine - maybe even a bit more.

Lol! I loved the way you said 'didn't anyone read what I wrote' and then realized you didn't write it - class! Made me chuckle anyway. ๐Ÿ˜†

Yeah, looking at the spec, it does look it's designed for 80mm and not more. It's tempting to push it slightly to say 100, but to be honest anymore of that and you might find it slackens it so much that it takes the edge off the handling anyway.

Afterall, you've got the Five for the slack, hooligan type stuff, so surely it's better to have two totally different bikes?! I'd be tempted to spend the money lightening it up and making it a bit more racey - that way you have a bike at each end of the spectrum that ride totally differently, but hopefully both lots of fun and good on different types of trail... well that's my 2 pence worth anyway... ๐Ÿ™‚

I've thoroughly enjoyed both my Five and my Kinesis very racey HT, so you might surprise yourself!

The secret's out then 'what lenght of fork can my bike take ?'

Well it must be 'frame size in inches x 10 = fork travel in mm'

4 u.

@ elaine annes last comment: but it doesnt matter how big the frame is (as others already said). It is what the frame is designed for. ie a 14" frame can be max 100mm and a 20" frame can be max 100mm. Or a 14" frame could be 160mm max. It all depends on the geometry for handling and how beefy the build is for strength.
