My Cane Creek headset has gone all rough and stiff. Can I replace the bearings or are cartridge units generally disposable items?

If I buy a Hope, is it worth the extra over something half the price?

If I want a serviceable headset should I just fit an 'old fashioned' loose balls headset from the likes of Ritchey for a fraction of the price??

Any other recommendations?

I replaced the bearings in a Cane Creek S3 a couple of weeks ago. Easy peasy, part from CRC and saved the cost and aggro of removing the existing cups from the frame and having the new ones pressed in.

Good headset, why change it when youcan just replace the worn part?

Hope this helps,

Alex

If you meant which headset, you will never go wrong with a chris king.
They last for ages, need little if any servicing and can be got for £60

I'd try replace the bearings in the one youve got first, but if youre buying new Ive got to agree with steve-austin, aspire velotech ship CK's world wide from US for free, sell em for £129 which is what £75? They really are as good as the evangelists say. I know of a few that have outlived the bike they were originally fitted to, and my 5 year old one would pass as new.

Buy cheap buy twice. Buy expensive, moan once 😉

I was hoping I could replace the bearings but to say they've 'only' lasted about a year, I was wondering if CK or similar was worth the outlay for fit and forget happiness (the answer seems yes)....thanks guys

I bought a hope headset 6 months ago and still as smooth as ever - My choice would be between hope and CK depending on your budget IMHO!

try to rescue the cartridge first - pop the seal on the top & flush with wd40/gt85 etc. if they're not pitted or corroded they'll be fine. once they've dried out pack out with as much grease as possible.
